When You Lose Something You Cannot Replace
Emily had been missing for three days.
Three days.
Three hopeless days.
Three days without that smile that could cheer any one up.
Three days without the best sister anyone could have wished for.
Three days without barely any sleep.
Three days filled with Victoria's cries.
Three days filled with Victoria's prayers.
Three days of a living hell.
Victoria did not know whether or not her sister was alive. Nobody even knew where she went. Victoria no longer had anyone to speak to, nobody to make her feel better when she was down. She was silent since she found out her lovely sister was gone. She had not spoken a single word. The girl just sat in her room, without any motions or thoughts. She was devastated, and nobody, not even her parents, tried to comfort her. For some reason, Victoria felt that her sister was in trouble.
The only source of light all of Yorkshire had was gone.
Three nights before, Emily came into the house, in fury. It was strange to see her this upset. She had mentioned something about how she wanted to marry a man that would not be anywhere close to their parents criteria for a husband. For the first time, Victoria took the role of comforting her sister and giving her advice. She put her older sister's chin up and simply said something very hypocritical, "If you love the man that much, then you're going to have to do something about it."
That must have been what had made Emily run away. Victoria buried her face into her hands. It was all her fault. She could not tell Mother, nor Father about what had happened those nights ago, she had to stay quiet about it.
Her head flung up, as she heard her parents call her name. 'So they have not forgotten about my existence,' the dull girl thought to herself. She slowly got off the bed, without any energy at all. She was like a dusty, old windup toy whose key has not been turned in years. She walked down the hall, to find her parents looking at a painting of Emily and Victoria on the wall. "Ah, so you're awake. Get in your finest dress, a painter is coming in a few hours. We are going to be getting rid of this terrible art piece, and replacing it with one of only you," her Father said, as he took the painting down.
Victoria's world completely stopped spinning, the speed had been slowly decreasing throughout the days, but now she could no longer take it. "So we're just going to forget about her? Just like that? As if she was never in the family?" Victoria's voice sounded croaky, due to the fact she had not been speaking much. She took a breath. She knew Emily would have wanted her to protest, but for some reason Victoria's brain refused to listen. "Can't we just keep it there? For Emily?" she trailed off, as she twiddled with her thumbs.
Lady Maudeline looked at her husband and back to Victoria. She was shocked, that Victoria was actually disagreeing with them. "I see your sister must have influenced you to speak up.. Did you know she stole my old wedding dress?" the Mother crossed her arms. Victoria put a finger up, about to interrupt, but Lady Maudeline went on. "Anyways, yes we are going forget about her, if she wanted to leave then let it be! We do not need her in the family anyways. Nobody will ever touch that piano again. You are now going to be an example of the perfect daughter. Do you understand?" she uncrossed her arms, and frowned at the daughter. "Mother, you do not understand, I have a feeling something bad might happen to her. She could be killed out there. We need to try to look for her!" Victoria exclaimed. "Go to your room, Victoria." she snarled.
Victoria sighed, grabbed the painting, and walked back to her bedroom, as her head looked down at the carpet. When she opened the door, she examined the room and tried to figure out where the painting would look best. She found an empty spot next to her vanity mirror, and hung the painting there. Though it was crooked, it was beautiful. Victoria stood, and admired the painting for a few minutes. She never noticed the details the artist had put into it. A grin formed on her face, as she realized the painting had caught Emily's beauty perfectly.
"I'll find you. Soon. I promise. When they're not awake, I'll look through Yorkshire, I'll look through the whole country to find you."
