Mysterious heads and tulipas. Istanbul, Turkey
The original name for tulips, Tulipa, came from the Turkish word "tulbend" or "turban”. The lovely flowers are native to Turkey, and the country even had a period of time in history from 1718-1730 called the “Tulip Era”. I didn’t know any of this before visiting Istanbul. What a fascinating history involving tulips, and equally interesting to me is the sight of many women with their heads covered. This photo conveys my surprise at encountering these 2 elements in my first visit to Turkey.
