My Triumphant Return!
Hey guys! Being back at UChicago has been pretty great thus far. Extremely tiring. But still, great! I’ve only changed one of my classes, because despite being on the quarter system many of the core classes are two to four class sequences. I switched out of German into NATSCI which is a four quarter sequence about the evolution of the solar system and other cool things.
So it’s winter quarter which is apparently the most emotionally grueling of the quarters. Which makes sense since all of the first year excitement from fall quarter has basically worn off and we don’t have a nice long break to look forward to at the end of it (spring break is only 8 or 10 days long.) And I have a ton of stuff to start preparing for with my RSO’s which will add to the work. But you know what that’s ok because I’m SUPER EXCITED FOR ALL OF THOSE THINGS (not the work, but the things adding to the work.)
First at Brent House when Lent rolls around, possibly sooner, a few of us are going to be getting ready for Confirmation, which essentially means you become a full adult member of the church. We met with our chaplain earlier in the week to talk about what we want to cover in our confirmation classes. We also had an Epiphany party with white elephant gift exchange on Wednesday and I made a cake. A group of people from Purdue who are old friends of the house were in town and stopped by. Two of them had just gotten engaged and I had a conversation about infectious diseases and the *cough best museum in America* Mutter museum with one of them. Apparently they took a train with Brent House a couple years ago to a thing called Gather and there was something about the train hitting a cow and there was bonding?
I will also be attending mblgtacc this quarter! MBLGTACC Is the Midwestern Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference taking place this February. I will be attending with a few other Q and A members and hopefully be taking a bunch of workshops on religion and sexual identity. Apparently fun parties and shows happen there as well. But yay being a productive member of society. (Fun Fact: this year’s conference is being hosted by Michigan State University, which is where a couple of our favorite teachers from our high school went!)
Finally Catcher in the Rhyme is getting ready to choose teams to go to the Chicago slam competition and the national college slam competition. (Other fun fact the college slam is taking place at Barnard which was another of my top choices, so if I go to that I will have a glimpse of what might have been.) We met this week and talked about what goes into being part of a slam team and the amount of work this is going to be. While it is going to be a huge creative effort, I love all of my prospective teammates and I know if I wind up on a team with any of them we will kick some serious literary ass.
It’s good to be back. I think it’s going to be an emotionally intense quarter. But you know what, it’s a new year and I have a ton of things I’m looking forward to.
On Early Action Decisions
To all of you who got disappointing news today: I know it sucks right now but I promise you, if I've learned anything from my parents and my friends it’s that college is just one of those things that works out. You will all wind up some place that fits you and the next four years are going to be some of the best of your life. You will meet incredible people and, if you’re lucky, find something you’re passionate about and you’ll learn to make it a constant part of what you do. I love UChicago, but when it comes down to it, it’s just a school and just one of a thousand places where you can find that kind of happiness. So crack open a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, make yourself some cookies, find some people to cuddle with, and just indulge yourself for a while. College apps are an insane amount of emotional effort and stress, but by the time you’re packing up for college in the summer you’ll be more excited than you can imagine.
To the newest members of UChicago: Welcome. Congrats. If you have any questions or want someone to spazz to please feel free to message me (preferably on my other blog.)
If you still have places to apply good luck. In the next few weeks I’ll be on break and would be willing to give anyone essay advice if they want it (just message me on my other blog.) And remember, it will all work out.
RSO's!
Hey all! I’m super sorry I haven’t posted anything since getting to college. It’s taken me a while to get used to the drastic reduction of free time in contrast to the weeks at the end of the summer when I was just lounging around with nothing to do. I’m going to try to post things at least every other week now that I’m much more used to the work. And to prove that I can do this I’m posting in the middle of finals so woot!
Anyway, UChicago is absolutely fantastic. I have a great group of friends, challenging classes, and am part of a few wonderful RSO’s (Registered Student Organizations.) Now as I said I’m in the middle of finals so I’m going to write about that last one rather than my classes. UChicago, like any awesome college, has a lovely assortment of RSO’s for whatever you’re interested in. There are three that I’m part of on a regular basis and they’re all full of amazing people who helped me get acclimated to being here.
So without further ado…
Queers and Associates-Q&A is the largest queer alliance group on campus. They have meetings every Tuesday which usually involves discussion and occasionally food. Q&A is an incredibly supportive and fun environment and as someone who was not a super-regular part of my high school’s GSA I’m really glad that I have the opportunity to be part of the queer community on campus. So far I’ve watched the election with these guys, spent part of my Thanksgiving at a potluck hosted at the board members’ apartment, applied to go to a conference for queer college students and allies in February, and debated whether the latke or hamentash is the queerer Jewish holiday food. (For those of you who don’t know UChicago hosts a latke/hamentashen debate every year.) Basically if you are considering UChicago and are worried about having a queer support network just know that everyone in this group is incredible and I’m so happy to have met them.
Brent House/Canterbury Club-Brent House is the Episcopal student center on campus that offers afternoon tea and evening prayer on Wednesdays, evening Eucharist on Sundays, and various other events. I write a lot about Brent House on my other blog so I’ll try and keep this one brief. I love everything about Brent House. I love that it’s a place where I can just go for spiritual quiet in the middle of the week. I love that it’s where I met my queer baking bro who is a conservative Jew. I love the conversations there. I love that I’m pretty sure it’s just a bunch of sci-fi nerds who use the whole Episcopal thing as a cover. Though it is technically affiliated with the Episcopal church, students of all spiritual affiliations are welcome to stop by for tea and conversation. Some of us might just vanish into the basement to pray while you’re there.
Catcher in the Rhyme-Catcher is UChicago’s spoken word group. From what I gather they’re a pretty young RSO but they’ve had an amazing amount of support this year and I’ve been privileged enough to hear some unbelievable poets perform there. They had a little trouble with the venue earlier in the year, but now perform in the café of UChicago’s super swanky new Logan arts building (it’s basically this giant tower of amazing studios, performance spaces and class rooms.) I’ve read there a number of times and placed second in their first slam competition. Depending on how often I read and how well I do in future slams I’ll qualify to perform on either the team they send to the Chicago slam competition or to the college national slam competition. Being a part of this group has already motivated me to improve my writing immensely, and if you come to any of the open mics the poets will make sweet love to your ears and you will leave absolutely awed.
So that’s basically what I’ve been up to. Will post more next week once I’m done with most of my finals stuff. Until then good luck everyone applying to school right now!
UChicago Send Off Party
I went to a UChicago send off and spent a significant portion of my time talking to this one younger alumnus who had been in archery club, met his wife through rugby, spent a week of winter quarter getting up at the crack of dawn to learn martial arts, and had a crazy awesome eighty year old mythology professor with five teeth and Doc Brown hair who couldn't use email.
Emma K: The Best Kind of College Logic
So you know how people have a list of constructive, logical, generally reasonable reasons why they attend the schools they attend? Well I have those, but I also have a bunch of silly random reasons why I chose UChicago over other places and I thought I’d just share a few of those, because often those reasons are just as important to finding a place as the "real" reasons are.
-UChicago loves marketing the silly random reasons for going there just as much as they like marketing the whole “harrumph harrumph we have resources and nobel laureates and life of the mind education look at how fancy we are harrumph” reasons. It adds a duality/mild bi-polar disorder to their personality that I really like.
-Very much related to the above, SCAV! I will probably be posting a lot about Scav in the coming months, but it’s basically this giant ridiculous nerdy explosion of insanity in the vague semblance of a scavenger hunt. What else could you ever desire?
-I actually really wanted to go somewhere cold and windy so Chicago was the perfect climate for me. Living in Baltimore has kind of made me want real winters. SO BRING IT MIDWEST.
-I’m looking forward to lurking around the UChicago Divinity school which is one of the best Div schools in the country. It makes my little religion nerd heart insanely happy. All of the future ministers and chaplains and theologians are probably going to take notice of my lurk-some ways and just be like "Really? This is whose going to be following us?" NO REGRETS.
-At the Divinity School café (Where God Drinks Coffee!) each year they have this thing called “The Bracket of the Gods” during March Madness where they match up a bunch of divine, historic and pop culture figures. The first time I visited the final match was between Obama and Buddha and Buddha won.
-The University of Chicago is secretly Hogwarts but with more introverts.
-Chicago is THE slam poetry/spoken word locale of the US so in my quest to become a poetry guru it was only logical that I would choose that city as my place to pursue higher learning.
-The most famous professor connected with the University is Dr. Indiana Jones.
-Rockefeller Chapel is not only a gorgeous church (be still my beating heart) but they apparently have arts events there sometimes and art+ religious spaces=Emma having lots of happy feels
-Gothic architecture and gargoyles
-I would never have been able to resist writing responses to at least one of the fabulous essay questions. I chose “Don’t write about reverse psychology.”
-Their admissions office as a wonderful tumblr (http://uchicagoadmissions.tumblr.com/) which features all of these classy vintage photos of UChicago students and I saw that and was just like “MY PEOPLE! I don’t care if you’re all old or dead now I will join you!”
-Phoenixes
Emma K-This article about UChicago's football program was actually what cemented this school as my top choice. It is a delightful and silly article on athletic greatness.
