repost @massi____ #emmanuelmassillon the United States, the term “School-to-Prison Pipeline” is a metaphor used to describe the ways that schools have become an entry point into the justice system for minors, many of whom disproportionately come from disadvantaged backgrounds mostly African American. The School to Prison Pipeline also refers to school discipline policies and practices that remove students from learning opportunities (e.g., out of school suspension) and push students out of school and prepare them for life(e.g., expulsion, school-based arrest) into the juvenile and criminal justice system . African-American children are the primary targets of school discipline. Research from Columbia Law School found that Black male students were suspended three times more often than white males. The same study found that Black girls were six times more likely to be punished than white girls. Uniforms are one of the reasons for this difference. Things such as headscarves, hair wraps, as well as for hairstyles like natural styles, braids, locs, and twists mostly do not fit in with most school’s uniform code along with other popular articles of clothing that a lot of African American youth would wear. In this work I placed School Uniforms Shirts next to Prison Uniforms on a hanging rack to talk about the School-To-Prison pipeline conspiracy and how it is believed that school uniforms consciously and subconsciously train a lot of black youth into accepting orders and routines from the judicial system. I’ve always been interested in how school uniforms correlate with the school to prison pipeline. When I was younger I went to many schools that required students to wear uniforms. I have personally watched as people who didn’t wear the proper uniform be punished by school faculty with suspension and other forms of punishment. That took kids out of the classroom. I made this work to start a conversation on the School-To-Prison pipeline conspiracy in hopes of finding a solution to this problem.
