It hadn’t occurred to her to be worried, not at first. Evie had been busy teasing her oldest sister for being grumpy at this time of the month when the retort of ‘and you’re such an angel right now’ had made her realise something terrifying. Although she didn’t actually try to not have children, she had given up the idealistic dream of being the perfect wife and mother years ago. Without children, she had some freedom from Edmund. With children, she would have to wonder what expectations he would put on them.
She’d escaped her sister’s company without an explanation, finding a corridor that had no one else there, and slid down the wall until she was sitting. If she really was pregnant, she would have to go home. Her hands were resting on her stomach, trying to control her breathing, but she was scared.
