Sintra, view of Pena Palace from the Moorish castle. The castle was constructed by the Moorish rulers of Portugal as an outpost to defend Lisbon and a small community lived around its walls. When Southern Portugal was conquered by the Christians of the North, they expelled those living there and built fresh walls over their former homes.
