Wild Nothing - Empty Estate (Captured Tracks - 2013)
At 29 minutes Empty Estate is 29 minutes more Wild Nothing than we thought we'd get this year. Its runtime is also approximately how long it took for me to write a text message earlier that asked "can you leave a key out" without saying "I'm in love with you." Lucky she doesn't give a fuck about unqualified reviews of indie rock EP's, lucky, because Jack Tatum is now verified indie rock royalty.
"I grew up loving Slumberland records," is a statement that repeatedly shouted over ones creative endeavours should never produce a discography as unblemished as Jack's, but yet again last year's Nocturne was just about as flawless and devastating a piece of guitar pop as it's possible to make. Look Jack, We all take almost all the decisive steps in our lives as a result of slight inner adjustments of which we are barely conscious. Right? Right. Jack's never woken up.
Intentionally or not, he's flexed a little creative muscle here, Empty Estate is clearly the little brother to Nocturne as Golden Haze was to Gemini - an expansion of its bolder ideas. Opener "The Body In the Rainfall" is about the most garage rock thing he's ever done before "Ocean Repeating" takes you on a journey that would have been very at home on Nocturne were it not for some added experimental vocal flourishes. "On Guyot" is the real stunner, a six minute fluttering piece of synth ambience that works to break up the record the way "Paradise" and "Through The Grass" did so perfectly. Nothing here outshines the highlights of his full lengths but they clearly don't aspire to, the machine he's built here is clearly embers of previous more fiery situation. It's the slightest and least serious Wild Nothing release yet, it's just Jack in a good, starry eyed place wanting to share a little bonus creative moment with the world. It's very much a pleasure to witness him operating outside the constrains of his bedroom dreariness. "This house is now a grave" would not fit anywhere on Empty Estate and as powerful as that line was, it's nice he doesn't have to sing it for now. Coldness and desolation are not the only way to make the world believe in you.
Jacks's immersed himself so heavily in his art that he's become immune to the pitfalls of his chosen occupation. He recorded Empty Estate in ten days and as a result it does pack a stream of consciousness feel that his other releases lacked. It's the type of independent rock utopia so many bands have tried to reach and it's the type of indie rock utopia that inspires you to think the world's working with you. That text message almost certainly wouldn't have have taken so long to write if I was listening to something else.
