BIOGRAPHY
( tw: death ) Born under an auspicious sign, the Başak family boasted few to no witches of considerable talent until Emre’s birth. In later years Emre’s mother would boast of how peaceful he had been as a newborn, how smoothly the labor had been, how he had never cried. Never fussed. Even in his infancy the young witch was thoughtful, observant, and as he grew, so too did his talent for magic. His familial coven could offer little more than a few grimoires, scrapped together by the mediocre witches that had come before him, but Emre’s parents wanted more for him. They hired the best to tutor their son, and while his hurricane of a baby sister came wailing into the world, Emre secluded himself further into his studies.
While his parents doted on him, he saw how his sister struggled, how she put herself through the ringer to impress an audience that had all but written her off. Safiye was gifted, but she was not Emre. Nobody was. The young man’s approach to magic was creative, innovative, and mathematical. He began using art as a medium for exploring the breadth of his power, paint, sculpture, craftsmanship, where some saw random splotches of paint, Emre had spent days quantifying the value of each specific element. Attuned it to his magic, placed it, enchanted it, and breathed purpose and life into what may have appeared simply mundane to others. Emre learned from the best, and by his late teens he had surpassed his tutors. Still, there was more to learn, and when Emre left home it was after years of feeling disconnected from the Başak name entirely.
Emre’s tutors advised him to seek out the Grecian oracle, Anastasia, and it was in Greece where he ended up studying underneath her for a period time. She gifted him an oracle of transformative magic and directed him North, where his quest for knowledge would take him next to Sweden. The Häljesta coven was likely one of the oldest in the world, their magic was deeply rooted in their ancestral lands and while they did not greet outsiders with open arms, they permitted the talented artistic witch to remain among them for a period of time. It was here that Emre stayed for several years, the expansive coven was powerful, with long buried secrets that the Başak family couldn’t have even dreamed of.
Among the Häljesta Emre learned a great deal, and he used the knowledge to create magical objects alongside the coven. When he had absorbed all that they were willing to part with, Emre was still not satisfied, he began to ask for more than what the Häljesta had promised; dark magic. It was not Emre’s desire to obtain it, he wished to understand it so that he might use that knowledge to unmake artifacts that had been created via dark magic. While the coven sympathized with his plight, he was refused, but not before he was given direction.
Some time later Emre found himself under the employ of a genasi who had use for his talents, while the witch had sworn himself to the others service, it was not without motive. The genasi specialized in the creation of dark objects, and was incredibly old, the genasi aimed to conserve and so Emre often carried out routine tasks for him. Emre had expressed a desire to sever his connection to Hecate, to learn under the genasi and prove himself the loyalist. While Emre never had any intention of joining the other, he learned a great deal of the task that was set before him, and after three years, Emre disappeared one night, the fake name he’d employed now a distant memory.
Emre returned home in time to bury his father, while he looked for Safiye, she was not there. The Başak had changed a great deal in the thirteen years since Emre had left the family behind, his mother, a whirlwind, was a wreck, and there was a piece of her that aimed to blame his sister. Yet, Emre could not bring himself to. While he resented Safiye’s absence, and lamented what he would come to learn she had turned to in her pursuit of power, he understood both. Emre had stayed away for so long, and yet, he had still returned home when the family had needed him most. He learned of his sister’s book store in Corinth and part of him thought it funny that she had followed so aptly in both his and their parents footsteps in traveling there.
Just under a year passed, and when the family had finished with their grief, Emre hung it up and left the Başak once more, this time in search of his sister. He wanted answers, but the moment that he stepped foot in Corinth, a curse took hold. Old, powerful, dark, it ripped through his very essence and left him lifeless in the alley that Emre had stumbled into. The genasi, it seemed, was not so easily betrayed. Emre had been given three-hundred and sixty-five days of freedom, one year, enough time to change his mind, then the curse took hold.
While Emre lay there in a pool of his own blood, there was a piece of him that wondered, why? What had it all been for?
It was then that she came to him: Atropos.
