P E R S I M M O N S Persimmons remind me of my dear mother. We have a persimmon tree at home. It's a prized tree, smaller than the big persimmon tree we have in New Zealand. They don't fruit a lot and Mum would guard them religiously until I came back for Christmas/Chinese New Year. She would fight off the birds that try to peck them. Most times, there's one sitting in the fridge with my name on it. The local persmminions are smaller and elongated. Here in New Zealand the persimmon trees are laden at this time. Aunty Yoke Har even have difficulty giving them away. So I always put my hand up for some of her persimmon harvest. The Chinese have always pressed persimmons flat and allowed to dry. They are them dusted with icing sugar and Chinese grocery shops sell them as ”em say”. They are also sliced and used in candy or dessert drinks. The Japanese do a dried version called fuyu persimmons. It’s a pressed fruit of nostalgic happiness. Furthermore, it’s loaded with nutrients. #persimmon #emsay #driedpersimmon #nostalgia (at Herne Bay, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx6VwbIJ5O9/?igshid=1c2vveu80aeex
