Feminism and Victimhood

I think this article sums up the best of what feminism is based on and what it shouldn’t be considered as. I remember this quote sticking out to me.

“Anti-feminism says that men can’t control their sexual urges and refrain from raping women that they find attractive. It says that women do have the power to prevent their own rapes, but only by not having consensual sex, not drinking, not going out alone, not flirting–pretty must just staying home where it’s safe.

Anti-feminism says that if a dude keeps making inappropriate comments to you at work, you should suck it up and learn how to take a joke. Guys will be guys.”

I made another post regarding how ratios are not beneficial and can be seen going against feminism. Some outside Tumblr users argued that as an overreaction and ridiculous because of how the girls are getting in free, but guys may have to pay. But it goes back to rape culture on campus and to reasoning to why more girls are wanted at parties. Girls should not feel less safe when going out and should not be considered as an asset because of sex or anything along those lines. Yes, Rutgers is known as a party school, but it does not mean feminism should be absent on campus and not advocated.

Ratio? How about no

Rutgers is notorious for their use of ratios for parties. Depending on the occasion, it typically is 5girls:1guy; it's that or pay about $10. I talked about this one of my friends and we realized. That's saying each girl is worth $2. The use of girls as payment to party is one of the reasons feminism is still needed on college campuses. Belittling women into low prices and people actually being willing to agree to those terms is a step back on campuses improving their awareness of feminism and in turn sexual violence.

This video makes me so angry. The girl clearly is not interested in the second guy that comes up to her and attempts to avoid him by saying that she has a boyfriend, only to be called out and shamed for doing so. But thank about it, women find the need to use the "sorry I have a boyfriend” line when they feel threatened or uninterested in someone but still feel the need to spare their feelings. No girl no woman has the obligation to accept a guy’s advances just because they are single or allows themselves to hold a conversation. Also, by using the boyfriend excuse, it shows how most men respect another guy more than the woman they are pursuing considering that they won’t simply back down from advances from a simple no.

Racial Caucus

Seeing a classroom deliberately divided up by race is uncomfortable and having several students represent everyone within that one race does not help. The racial caucus opened my eyes on different issues that cannot be addressed in an appropriate manner in fear of offending someone and coming off as defensive towards your own group.

Being Asian has given me more privilege than I had thought about, especially since it is sometimes labeled as the “model minority”.  Many of the stereotypes or judgments made towards the race are considered “positive” because it stems from the idea of overachieving. With the rest of the girls in the racial caucus group, we agreed that Asians are sometimes seen as on a pedestal that is unrealistic. However, we all could not isolate a single instance where we felt targeted by others. This brings up another form of privilege, for at least us in the group. One thing that stuck to me is, how one girl in another caucus group said that they were jealous of the stereotypes put on Asians. 

I am still confused of where Asians fall in the matter of how different races are seen. However, this exercise did help me open my eyes on different experiences people have just because of where they are from, and how they look. It brings up the sense of prejudice that still exists today and is the root of discrimination everywhere.

The “A” word

Lauren Rankin brought a whole new perspective to what the controversy around abortion is. I never thought much of abortion because it was something that I never had to confront in my life. But, the basis and what the hoopla is about regarding the topic does affect me and other women. Preventing women from having the right to have a safe abortion is unlawful and it is not done only through laws and legislation; with people physically harassing those who go into clinics for an abortion, this emphasizes how women’s rights is being withheld. 

When discussing abortion, many people use religion and ethics as a basis of the argument. However, it is a matter of women’s rights. When these issues are taken to the government to discuss hardly any of those who have a say are women. Why is the government meddling with the choices a woman can make to their body when they are not directly affected by what is being done? Forcing laws to ban or defund abortion is creating a barrier between improving how women are treated in the United States, and passing these laws sends the message that our choices are not first priority and considered important enough to consider.
