What is EN 590?
EN 590 is the benchmark for automotive diesel fuel in Europe. It was introduced to align with evolving European emission standards originally; the specification has undergone several revisions to reduce environmental pollutants, most notably sulphur.
Sulphur used to provide a natural lubricant in diesel but was eliminated because of the emissions caused by diesel that sulphur contributed to. Then people started to demand fewer emissions, creating substitutes for more refined fuel, followed by the introduction of various higher-quality additives to satisfy and maintain performance and lubrication for modern engines.
