Making encaustic cement tiles, where colored cement is poured in patterns to make the motif

The liquid cement is then set with powdered cement and the whole thing is pressed together

I became obsessed with encaustic tile in 2020, when a town hall in the eastern US took advantage of the lockdown to rip out the battered linoleum floor in a heavily traveled hallway and discovered a gorgeous encaustic tile floor underneath. Encaustic tiles have been in use since the Victorian era. This video has talking, but I found it interesting because it uses an unusual method. Instead of pouring all the colors at once, this manufacturer presses clay into a relief mold and then pours colored glaze in the depression surrounding the image. (I don’t quite recognize the posh gentleman getting the tour so I’m sure I’ll feel very silly once he’s identified.)
Anyway. I think encaustic tiles are very cool and I’m a little jealous of any craftsperson who gets to keep a tradition alive. I hope you enjoy too ☺️
