the latest issue of Encircl is out! the challenge this time was to write a story containing 100 words or less on the topic of “Abundance.” the articles will be rolling out steadily over the next couple months, so check back on the site for updates. i made this quick illustration to accompany Omar's piece, “St. John’s Wort.” read it here.

additional notes on the flower:

-Latin name: Hypericum perforatum

-its use as a medicine dates back to ancient Greece. in recent years, it has been studied extensively as a treatment for depression

-the plant gets its name from being in full bloom around June 24, the traditionally celebrated birthday of John the Baptist

happy vernal equinox! 

today, on this first day of Spring, i am excited to share an illustration i contributed to an online magazine started by a bunch of friends for the purpose of exchanging thoughts on the environment, natural history topics, and other musings about the world around us. it's called Encircl, and it's a space for people who find that their passions for science and the humanities fuel one another. lots of stories, lots of pictures-- lots to ponder!

my drawing accompanies my friend Paul's article, "The Walking Dead," in the second issue that launched today. it specifically references the California Newt (Taricha torosa) migration that carries from Fall to Spring in the Berkeley hills each year. since the '70s, park officials have blocked the main road so slow-moving newts can cross safely from their terrestrial summer homes to the ponds and streams where they will mate and reproduce.
