The Child nation, the Timelord and the Blue Box ~ Part Two
Tardis. "Time And Relative Dimension In Space." Apparently, that was supposed to mean something, but to Francis, it was just one more thing that was totally beyond understanding. He was left sitting in the ship now, watching the Doctor bustling about the engine's controls. He was blabbering about something about time and space and other things the little boy couldn't get at all. He was too dazzled by the interior of the ship to listen. After a few minutes, the Doctor seemed to notice it, but kept on talking anyway.
"You're not listening, and I don't blame you, but I won't stop talking, it helps me think and aaaah my mind just won't stop sometimes ! Are you alright though ?"
The little boy just nodded. It was just too much for him. He was although quite happy that for now nothing terrible was happening ; and flashed a smile. After all, the Doctor was rather funny. Did he ever stop ?
"By the way where do you live ? I don't even know where I am supposed to land !" "At my bigger self's house." "Your- ?" "Yes, my bigger self." "Did I hear you well, you mean you but older, do you, tiny Francis baby ?" "I do !"
The Doctor seemed puzzled for a few seconds, but he had no time to stop and think for now. He muttered something like "Time paradox... And nothing happened.." and kept on driving the Tardis, until Francis felt it stabilize. The boy heard the same really weird noise than at the beginning, except better, because that time, he wasn't so scared anymore. The Timelord ran to him and picked him up in his arms.
"See ? Nothing bad happened !"
Francis grinned, nodding.
"I like you better when you smile. Do you like the ship now ?" "It looks like Disneyland."
The Doctor snorted. "Disneyland now, Disneyland ! Good one ! The Tardis is way better than Disneyland, though. Did you go to Disneyland ? Was it good ? I could show you way better than Disneyland."
Confused by so many questions at the same time, Francis shrugged. "I went there, and it was real nice." "Aaaaaah there's better parks though ! You should see Badirland on planet 789 ! That's a real park !" "If you say so."
Francis didn't even know what a planet was anyway. The Doctor carried him out of the Tardis. They simply found themselves in the child's room, at his bigger self's house. The boy sighed from relief and sat down on his own bed. Restless, the Timelord examined the room, then started pacing again.
"Did anything happen since you've met your bigger self ?" "No." "Any catastrophe ?" "No !" "You're probably right.. I would have been there."
Francis tilted his head. Why should anything bad happen? "Did that happen with other nations, Francis ?" "What ?" "Meeting their alternate self. Did that happen with other nations ?" The little boy started thinking about it. He was pretty sure Arzzhur had met his bigger self as well. Ivan was often with his younger self and it was like he had a son. There were some child nations running around ; and as far as he knew, nothing terrible had happened since then. "It did. With Arzzhur and Ivan, and I'm pretty sure they are not the only ones. And I didn't see anything bad happen. It is a little weird at the beginning, but I'm having great times with my bigger self. It's like a daddy or a big brother."
There was a short silence, while the Doctor seemed to be thinking. Francis got a little scared. Beind reminded that his presence here and meeting is other self was not supposed to happen was always a little frightening. His voice shaked as he whispered : "Please don't take me away from him."
The Doctor seemed started and hurried to sit in front of the small child, laying his hands on his shoulder and looking at him straight in the eye.
"I won't, I won't, I'll find something.." he said in a soft voice before giving a hug to the little blonde. Francis believed him. You wanted to believe everything he said. As the man got up again while whispering things to himself, the boy tried to think of something else. But he couldn't, because the Doctor wouldn't stop talking.
"If you and all your little nation friends were humans, the world would have collapsed from the paradoxes by now. But somehow, with you nations, time is more... fluid. You do live a lot longer than any human. Look at you, you are older than 1000 years and you still have the appearance of a child, and even the mind of a child..."
"I'm seven !" "Yeaaah, yeah, I mean, technically, you're 1190 years old, kid."
Ah, indeed. Francis tended to forget what was his real age, because he liked refering to his human one.
"How old are you ?" "I'm 900 years old," the Doctor groaned, "aaaaaaand before you start bragging about how you are older than me, please, YOU did not travel through the universe, you are still a child." "But I am still older than you." "Yeah right but I'm more experienced, baby France." "I don't care, I am still older, " the little boy concluded with a huge, teasing grin. The timelord shrugged and smiled. "You bad, bad child. Aaalright, let's get serious again for a minute." The boy straightened up to listen as the Doctor started explaining.
"Visibly, the fact that you nations can meet your alternate selves does not damage the Universe, and that is nice for you, because it means you can stay here for a certain amount of time. I think you will want to go back to your own times when older ; especially if you want to do your work as a nation." He added, chuckling ; "And I'm not sure your bigger self will want to keep you when you become a crazy angsty teenager.." "What's a teenager?" "Something you don't want to become. Nevermind," he said, stopping Francis from asking anything more, "There's however something you can't do anymore. You can't do that dream traveling thing. There is a gap in your room which connects it to the one you had in the 12th century. Have you been feeling homesick, Francis ?" "I did. I did, a lot." "That is what I thought. Nations have a powerful mind. You were so homesick that your mind created that passage, so that you could go back and forth between this century and the one you come from. Because you were homesick, but you didn't want to leave this place either, right ? You were torn. But of course, all of this happened without you knowing. And like humans sleepwalk when something happens in their subconscious, you started timetraveling in your sleep." "But then, what happened the first time ? How did I wake up here, in the modern days ?" "That, I am not sure. I do have some ideas. ... Is there any statues where you lived ? "Of course, we have statues !" "Angels ?" "We do !" The Doctor winced, but didn't explain anything more. He looked like someone who had something really, really important to say.
"Listen to me, carefully, now. You can't do that. You can't go back like that anymore. You have to choose between staying here, for now, and going back and living your life there."
That was something Francis had been thinking about for quite a long time, as he knew that he would probably have to make that choice sooner or later. He did not hesitate in giving the answer : "I am staying. But not forever. You know that." The Doctor nodded.
"You got it. You're a clever one ! You can't time travel on your own anymore, as I am now going to close the passage. However.. I'll come back." "You will ?" "When you are old enough, the Tardis will come again and pick you up. And I'll bring you back to your people, to your country, and to your work. No time will have passed at all there. They will be probably surprised to see you older, but that kind of thing happen with you nations."
That seemed nice. It was like allowing him to have an actual childhood before doing his work. He was going to miss everything, for sure, but it was temporary. He looked up to the man in the suit, before giving him his best smile. He felt grateful.
"Thank you. I thought you were going to send me back just now. Because that's not how time is supposed to be." "I am the Doctor. The last of the Timelord. I am the one who decides how Time will be." "...But you are still younger than me." "... Shut up, kiddo !"
The child giggled, avoiding the cushion that the Doctor had thrown at him in a feigned rage. They both laughed.
"I'm going to close the passage, now. Are you ready ?" "I am."
He was trying to act strong, now, but he grabbed a cushion to hold anyway. What kind of weird act was the Doctor going to perform ? He patted the boy's head, and got out his strange pen-device.
"By the way, what's that ?" "That's a sonic screwdriver."
... Francis did not know what a sonic was, and he didn't know what a screwdriver was either. That wasn't helping. He shrugged and watched the blue light at the end of the object. It was getting more and more intense, until it filled the room. There was a loud noise then, like a door slamming, and the light turned to white, and it was brighter. The blonde hid his head under a cushion, until he felt a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"You can come out, little Francis baby, I'm done."
He did so ; the timelord pulled him into a hug, rubbing his back. "It was nice meeting you." "You are leaving ?" "I can't stay."
Francis hugged him tighter then. He didn't know why he liked him after spending such a short amount of time with him. But he did. He couldn't help.
"You are the strangest man who ever walked the Earth. After Arzzhur." The Doctor let out a small laugh ; "You have no idea, child." "I'm glad I met you too." The Timelord smiled, before letting go of the kid.
"See you in a few years, then, Francis baby." "See you, Doctor-who-cures-the-Time !"
The Doctor waved ; "You might want to keep your eyes on the Tardis," he added before going inside the blue box.
In no time, the now almost familiar sound could be heard, and dazzled, Francis watched the ship vanishing.
He wasn't sure he was going to tell anyone about that. Maybe Arzzhur, since he already knew about the dreams, and apparently he knew the Doctor. But not anyone else.
End (?)
