Beginning in 1949 and continuing through 2011, the dots representing Democrats and Republicans have gradually moved apart, building upto a very obvious divide. The gray areas indicating cooperation have gradually receded to mere wisps in recent years.
This visualization begins to trace the story or perhaps provide a possible explanation that the hyper partisan environment has stymied the legislative body's ability to come up with new solutions to fix the United States' problems - it's probably more evident today.
