One of the hardest things to admit for a trauma survivor is being a trauma survivor. It took me until this last year to say the word "survivor" with some level of certainty, and even now, I feel a little anxiety when I tell someone new about my history. No one wants to carry a label, being misunderstood or treated differently, and in our society, survivors are often viewed as "broken," rather than human beings who are healing, so often, we pretend. What if we stopped pretending, though? I did, and it has been the most liberating experience of my life. I am who I am. My story is my story, even if it is hard for someone else to hear. I survived it and it is mine to share, and this is my life after trauma. ... The nonprofit for which I am a board member, End of the Innocence, is hosting a special event on July 17th at 11 AM Pacific Time (2PM Eastern), titled "Life After Trauma." We will be talking about the long term affects of sexual abuse and sexual assault and how people deal with trauma, years after it happened. One of the speakers will be my husband, @the_envirominimalist_dad, who will share openly what it's like being married to a survivor of chronic child sexual abuse and multiple sexual assaults, both as a teen and young adult. Happy birthday to one of the most accomplished singer/songwriters of our time, the incomparable Don Henley. His songs have spanned generations and will continue to because of their craftsmanship and universality. An accomplished member of the Eagles and solo artist, he continues to add to that body of work that encompasses forty-five years. His music has touched me in a way few artists have. I look forward to more wonderful songs from him in the years to come.
