That trope between enemies where one is hell bent on taking down the other, and the other makes their life hell but insists they’re best friends (much to the never ending grievance of their enemy). But no one can deny, they are definitely best friends.

hello. it is three a.m. i can’t sleep. so here’s a ramble!

been thinking a lot about enemy tropes. i mean: enemies to [relationship], enemies to strangers, strangers to enemies, [relationship] to enemies, exes/ex-bsf to enemies, all of it. like- and there are so many kinds of relationships, too. coworkers or classmates, casual friends, best friends, romantic partners, queerplatonic partners, acquaintances, so many. there is SO much fucking potential when it comes to writing enemies, yet i feel like it all gets written the same way. it’s almost always just some sort of mild dislike for each other with some bickering. nonono i want FUCKIN RIVALS. i mean PURE ASS HATRED. i want these two to fucking despise each other. and there’s so many reasons that they could be enemies, too. i’m talking “you stole my lunch money” all the way to “you m*rder3d my family member”. it doesn’t even have to be sad. i want action, the feeling of pure fucking rage, verbal and/or physical fights. do they fight constantly? or do they hate each other so damn much that they can’t even stand to be in the same room? yeah, when i say i want “enemies” i mean i want enemies.

also been thinking a lot about slowburn. when i was younger, i used to hate slowburn. you would NEVER catch me reading or watching anything with a slow start. and for the most part, slowburn isn’t always my favorite to read. i sometimes have a hard time finding slowburn that i actually like cause sometimes the burn is too slow, and sometimes it isn’t slow enough. i really didn’t start to appreciate slowburn until i started writing. and i wrote a lot when i was younger, and still didn’t like slowburn. but as i’ve gotten older and grown as a writer, i feel like i’m starting to see the true beauty of it. because writing slowburn? oh my fucking god, dude. i could write that shit all day every day. i’m an absolute whore for wordbuilding and characterbuilding. oftentimes i spend all my time focusing on fleshing out the characters and universe instead of actually creating a plot. it’s a bad habit, but i’m working on it! for me, slowburn just comes naturally.

now combine these two. enemy tropes with slowburn? i think

god it’s just so good imo. take any of the enemy tropes i listed and add slowburn? *chef’s kiss 🤌🏻* so if my next few fics involve slowburn and/or enemy tropes… you know why.
