Journal 8 - ENG 112

In my opinion, "Text" is a way that people can communicate together to transfer the information that they want to give to other.  "Text" is a powerful tool that people can express what they think, what they feel, what they want, or what they need.  For example the word "eat", there is only one meaning of it but we have so many way to express that such as English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, etc….  Either ways, the information that we gave to others is the same.  A law is giving rules that everyone must follow it.  A newspaper is giving information that everyone can find to read. A movie is expressing a story including actions, feelings, sounds, and images.  An advertising is introducing informations of a product.  Therefore, a speech or a conversation is a kind of text also.  Each of them has different way to transfer informations to audiences.  However, in common, they are just vary types of Text. 

Developing to a new step, we have literal meaning vs implied meaning.  Literal meaning is accurate of each word.  Implied meaning is a higher level of "Text" because it will depend on attitude, tone, expression of speaker to give different meaning.  Most of the implied meaning is giving an opposite side of the literal meaning.  In some cases, the implied meaning is a good way to share and console others.  However, the implied meaning can be a ridiculous speech either.

Culture Wars

Education system is one of the most noticed issues in nowadays.  Educational methods are also a controversial topic.  The way that we train young kids will affect directly to their personality and ability.  We have some different perspective views in how should we train young generation.  In Asia, children have to listen to adults and they are not allowed to argue to older people.  As Vietnamese ancestor, they thought that adults are people who have such a huge amount of experience in life.  Adults definitely have wider views in everything than children.  So, the way they trained their kids is to absolutely obey to older people.  Asian kids are obeisant their teacher.  Politeness becomes a strict rule in classroom, for example students are not allow to talk while teacher is speaking.  Students only can talk after allowance.  It is true because children will become good individuals, well-trained, and polite.  However,  it also invisibly makes children depend on others's ideas too much.  They do not know how to make an important decision.  They stand behind their parents, and afraid of being responsible.  Totally different to Asian education system, American students are allowed to express whatever they think in classroom.  American students can discuss with teacher at classroom.  American people think that freedom in speech can built up independence, personality, and fairness.  It is true because American people want to their children are strong and independent in their life.  However, this thing can make children out of their parents's control.  It is very sad to hear the news about children yell at their parents and go away from home, or they attack their teacher if they have troubles with some things.  So where is a fault in educational methods?

ENG 112 - Journal 6

This is the first time that I can write an eight to ten pages essay in my life.  I did not think I could do it, because I was not a good writer.  I am so afraid of English classes, and all of the writing work.  Before, I only could write three pages essay maximum.  I can not image how can I do it until I have done my essay. It was not easy.  First of all, I have to gather enough supporting ideas for main points, and make sure they are interesting to readers.  In writing process, I want to make sure my grammar is correct, no run-on sentences, and word choice.  I think about my topic anytime, and take note some interesting points that I will use on my essay.  Sometimes, I had some good ideas while I was thinking about it.  However, I could not believe that I really forgot when I started to write my essay.  So, it is a lot better to take note.

The peer review is really helpful.  At least, I will realize what else I missed on my essay.  They gave me some points that I did not pay attention to before, so I have a chance to fix my essay final draft.  The response process also gives me a chance to review other’s good points that I can learn from, and bad points that I should avoid in my essay.

ENG 112 - Assignment 3

S: I do not agree with this prohibition. This law will be unfair for lots of people. It can make a bunch of inconvenience for people in life. Therefore, I can not find any concern between driving and studying.. P: When they decide to make a law, there always has reasons for it. I want this forcement can help to decrease the percentage of dropout highschool students. S: This has no evidence to show it will be a good solution for them. If they want to decrease the number of dropout students, they should think how to improve an education system. This action will prevent people from doing another things. P: Students should focus on studying, not another things. This action will help them pay attention to their school. Student should notice that a highschool diploma is the basic foundation for the future career. We are trying to help them by giving an enforcement, or they are not going to do it because of some immature thoughts. S: High education may help people get a bright future, but what will happen to others who can not finish highschool diploma and are not able to drive? The rest of their lives will depend to others just because they can not get a driver liscense. Going to work, to buy some groceries, or even back to school, they have to depend on others. This is so inconvenience. P: If they do not allow to drive car, they can use public transports. This also can save our environment. This law can be a caution for students who have an intention to drop out of school.
