But because the resto of the bus was full-on I simply couldn't afford such an investment. And unfortunately by the time I wanted to make the move to purchase a kit - their program became obsolete and they were only selling turnkey applications. So I completely dismissed the idea if having a Raby engine however I still had plans to at least get hold of a DTM upright cooling kit for my old type 4 engine. Slowly everything faded out and turned my attention to other upgrades like the Subaru conversions done by Fellows Speed Shop
I had plenty of time to think and figure out the best solution as based and relocated to Dubai I don't have my bus with me here. The DTM shroud includes aluminium backing plate, aluminium surrounding 'tinware', crank pulley, fan belt, etc.. but excludes fan and alternator (standard Type 1 parts). The Raby conversion header is the exhaust-to-header only, is designed for putting a Type 4 into a Type 1 or 2, and excludes the silencer. Full details below:

THE STORY - back to the workshop
After 12 months of hard work the T1 was ready to be taken to the workshop for modifications and assembly as the body was ready and nicely completed – all panels were replaced and treated.
In 2010 the works of customization began with the front suspension modification where wedid a 2" narrowing to fit porsche fuchs alloy wheels (5x112) nicely,removed the front suspension and drum brakes and replaced it with servo disc brakes (from an 1968 T2a transporter) keeping the original front beam,and a slight lowering only for road comfort and made it adjustable.
The whole steering mechanism was removed and professionall restored to a very high standard.
Then we moved to the rear suspension modification to fit IRS (Independent Reduction System) so we can fit the brand new BBT AT code transmission(freeway flyer) and the typ4 engine.
When all the body modification was done and the brand new wiring loom (including 10 stand fusebox, wires for sound, engine starter button etc) was fitted and all small holes and fixing points were set, we have removed everything and taken the bus to do the paintwork.
THE STORY - engine
The original 1500cc aircooled engine was not present when we found the bus and the replacement F-code 1600cc was in a pretty bad shape and to be honest my intention wasn’t really to drive around with a max of 70km/h so I have purchased a 2000cc TYPE4 engine with a custom cooling system, added a set of 40” dellorto carburetors and an Ahnendorp exhaust system with custom made header pipes. As the original transmission would not suit the power of the type4 engine I have also purchased a brand new AT code transmission from BBT for better performance.
It's a standard CU code 2 liter typ4 engine with the following upgrades:

The cooling keeps the oil temperature at a comfortable 95 – 100 degrees celcius even at steady highway speeds exceeding 120km/h it's tried and tested runs very sweet, no problem at all with keeping up to the traffic going up hills. The cooling is super - it's not a porsche fan but cools just as good or even better and a pro is that for this fan and shroud we didn't have to machine the engine block to fit the fan. It's made using a robur turbine which was supposed to cool a 3180ccm truck engine (very effective)
