Why do people always come to tour the lab when im doing the grossest jobs
Like yes come work here please. What? No ignore the man crouched in that side room over there digging sludge out of a drain. Dont worry about it 😊

Great end to the semester, in the past week i have:
Been asked by a professor to "take any issues i have to her privately and offline" and "not to make a big deal about things in front of the whole class" when i asked her when we can expect grades back for our project assignments (we cant move forward in the project without them) and told her she technically cant have an assignment due during finals (a technicality that people conveniently only remember when the professor is terrible)
Decided that professor is absolutely right, i shouldnt make things a big deal in front of the class and subsequently
Involved the department chair
Filled out a very satisfying and cathartic end of semester survey about said professoe
Found out you can edit those surveys
Working in a lab really be having you say shit like "The lab's unhappy rn, i think its bc someone got rid of the Oil Bowl"
Keeping in my theme today on ragging on my professors, engineers seem to delight in having the most crunchy and barely legible reference diagrams
Like what??
These arent even the worst ones (Moody Diagram for fluid mechanics remains my least favorite)
Time to find the least serious fabric to patch my work pants
(Side note what would be the best way to patch this? I was just gonna put a patch over it but should i sew it closed first?)
Im beginning to think the grads think theres some magical cleaning fairy wiping down the saws and digging cement out of things
An hour until my final 😭💔
Interviewing summer interns for the lab (i got a different internship this summer, so they hired 3 people) (I think i deserve a raise) (i wont get one tho) (but like, the dot is paying me more than the university) and two of them were freshman (which is fantastic, i love it when freshman get internships, literally the best thing you can do) (thats how i found out i kind of hated my first major (i stuck with it two more years)). And anyways this one freshman was an absolute delight and visibly nervous (first Adult Interview) and as i was showing him around and explaining what his tasks would be (involving saws and large ovens and various machines which crushed things), he asked very nervously how dangerous this job is
Which honestly made me pause bc like huh, i guess if youre not used to it, the masonry saw which can cut through asphalt and cement like nothing and the solvent which dissolves asphalt binder in under 5 minutes does look scary as hell.
But, its a lab
The most dangerous thing in the lab is you. If you dick around and dont take things seriously, if you dont respect the other researchers and the equipment, you are far more dangerous than the saw or the solvent or the ovens or the cement mixer on their own.
Anyways he got hired bc the main purpose of that part of the interview was to see how serious they were and if they could be trusted to follow safety instructions
