Hands poised at the sides of her hips, the sight of a tied up Mercenary wasn’t at all what she’d anticipate to see so early at the start of the match. To interfere with someone else’s containment and force the hunter to switch their target onto him– no, wasn’t that just false bravery? Poor, poor Subedar, meatshield tendencies (or perhaps a case of inflated ego and unfounded confidence) facing the Sculptor backfiring in not one, but two people seated all the more uncomfortably on their respective rocket chairs. After minimal observation of how her playstyle tendencies leaned toward even a rookie like Nadia could discern that the girl was an expert at map control and multitasking. A swift chuck of her chisel, the horrible trill of clashing ivory, and multiple people could be down in an instant. Surely he knew that. Fortunately for her, this rocket chair was unoccupied by locks of blonde and looming statues, and such, Nadia was allowed a brief moment of reprieve to give him a hard time. Orange tresses bob as she can’t help but give a small laugh at Naib’s expense.
“You’re setting a great example for me to follow. Should I too, run at the Sculptor when that Prospector was doing fine without your help?” Lucky Nadia, for the countdown of Naib’s rocket chair went even slower than the other’s– was that the sound of a flare gun in the distance? Another provided moment of bought time to tease the man? Well, if you say so! She moves in to untie his restraints, but does not give him the space to get up. The Traveling Saleswoman instead stands purposefully in his way to hopefully discourage him from slipping out of the armrest’s loosened shackles. He could shove her out of the way if he truly wanted – though, she has an inkling of a feeling he wouldn’t.
“Old habits die hard, I understand that. I won’t allow you to die on my watch, but you better be more careful. You’re one of the designated rescuers here.” She places her own hands atop the shackles, leaning forward as she bends at the waist. After she’s satisfied with the extent of probable discomfort due to the close proximity, she pulls away and sidesteps to allow him the space that was far overdue to finally get off the chair.
“You heal up too slow, so you’re better off going into hiding and decoding carefully before the Sculptor comes back to hunt you down. You’re valuable, and sometimes, the best treasures are left undiscovered. Let’s keep it that way.”

“kindness that can never be requited, tell me, where is the help in that, my friend?” @ tracy

Self-sufficient, more often than not pale skin littered by countless of bruises on her legs as a mark of successful hunter containment and being all the more easily wounded, Tracy Reznik has now become rather proficient with on-the-fly, quick fixes to alleviate the pain of injuries. The tip of her tongue sticks out of the corner of her lips as she works away at wrapping the Mercenary’s arm with fresh bandages, humming a bit in her handiwork as she refused to allow the silence of the room to shift her nerves. Surely, this was something he could manage to do on his own, but after doing such a good job in their last match, the least that she could do was help him out with something minor, no matter how he personally felt about the matter. It’s only when gruffness pulls her out of her focus that she blinks in a bit of confusion at the charged question. The answer – well, wasn’t it simple?
“When you do something out of the kindness of your heart, you aren’t doing it for gratification or for something in return. You do it ‘cause it’s the right thing to do, or ‘cause you care about the other person.” The figurative gears in her head turn like clockwork, registering full well that the man before her was implying something rather untruthful. A bluff. The person who would go out on a limb for his teammates and do other small acts of kindness in his own pointed ways – what kindness was there for him to return when he was the one enforcing his own kindness and laying the foundation for others? Lone wolf he may be, Naib was still a leader. A role model – no, perhaps too glamorized a term – someone simply to respect. Tracy chuckles softly as the bandages are finally set in place.
“The fact that you’re worrying about that ‘sorta thing proves that you’re a good person.”
Her hand moves toward the pile of items that were formerly placed tidy inside of a bright red medical kit and proceeds to grab something rather small. “Naib,” she gives a smile while proceeding to stamp an (entirely unnecessary–) band-aid on the top of his forehead. “Why won’t you be honest with yourself and let others protect you too?”
@enmorgue said: “ i placed in them blind hopes. ”
The silence that followed bore down upon the space with a meaningless urgency. Still, Norton didn’t speak. There was nothing a man like him could say about guilt, and nothing to say about those who deserved to carry it. Subedar seemed to him to bear it like a part of his own flesh, something intimately connected to his essence, in surrender-- or perhaps acceptance, of the life he’d lived. But the expression Norton saw when he glanced over was not that of a man who’d beaten his past. It was rigid and cold, the face of an old soldier still trapped in the chokehold of regret.
The Prospector straightened himself and sank back against the wall behind him, seeming indifferent to the stiffness of the atmosphere. The Mercenary stood at his side, a little shorter, but somehow always larger in presence to himself. One question lingered, unvoiced at the front of Norton’s mind.
Knowing what he knew now, would Subedar have done anything different?
He fixed his gaze forward, and finally put a voice to his thoughts. “ If blind hope is enough of a reason to keep putting one foot in front of the other, there’s nothing wrong with using it. ”
