about intelectual property.
I'm going on vacation for a week in Costa Rica. As part of my preflight checklist i poll myself for information i would regret keeping to myself should something go wrong. This time i found the following quote: "When it is in my mind, it is mine and i may do with it as i see fit." - Archimedes in Enough Sleep.
Any idea which is in your mind is completely yours. No matter who may have said it already before you thought it, or who declared it more prominently afterward to gain the attribution. Word on the street is that Socrates or someone of that waygone era objected to the written word as a vessel for knowledge. The idea was that somehow your knowledge is incomplete because you did not come to it yourself. I have certainly read more ideas than i have in my mind, and most of them simply passed through me and faded away, but a few stuck. They interacted enough with my other thoughts to pull out of the fray and join me in my travels. Some of those ideas i tested. Some of those i found useful. And a rare few have colored my actions.
For example: I own the idea that there is inherent worth and dignity in every individual. Millions of other people may also own this idea, i sure didn't invent it, i do not know or care which human might have been the first to write it down in those or similar words. When it is in my mind, it is mine and i may do with it as i see fit.
How this notion might apply to patents, copyrights, or any other intelectual property is a worthy point for discussion.
