Hunger Games AU

Maycien hated this time of year.  It was bad enough that he had to leave his family to mentor the newest group of tributes from his district, a task that was made harder by the fact that there hadn’t been a winner since him all those years ago, but this year his nephew, Asher, had been chosen as the male Tribute from District 8 this year.  While it was always hard to watch the young people die, this year he would have to return to his broken hearted brother and sister in law and a second nephew who would blame himself for the death of his younger brother, no matter what the truth was.  Needless to say, Maycien was not happy to be here, at all, and he was even less happy to find himself among the existing pool of Victors, rubbing elbows with the Gamemakers.

There were two other Victors from his district that he knew fairly well.  One was an old man who was prone to bouts of fairly psychotic rage, and an older woman that Maycien didn’t know very well, but she had taken a shine to him when he was a tribute and always took the time to ask him about his daughter and his family.  Maycien usually stuck close to her at these formal functions they were forced to take part in, but this time the Victors were being forced to dance and make nice with the Gamemakers and Maycien was forced to select one.  He landed on an attractive young woman who happened to be standing near him, and tried, in his awkward, softspoken way, to win her over, for the sake of his nephew.  “Miss, would you care to dance with me?”

"What?  Let me see it, not that I’m any kind of a medical professional, but I’ve spent enough time in medical to have picked up a few things here and there."

"Make you?" Maycien laughed, glad he had recovered enough to actually be able to have some fun with Jaime without either of them worrying about hurting him.  

"Oh, I’ll make you alright," he scooped her into his arms and collapsed with her on the bed in his quarters, tickling her and then gently pinning her down, "I’ll let you up, but you have to kiss me first."

+ Good Memory

A few years ago, before his daughter was born, he was walking around in his hometown, while visiting his father, and he met these kids who were trying to give away their dog’s puppies.  He looked over the available dogs and one of them just caught his eye and he took it right away.  Since then, Frost, has been one of his best friends and he hates that he can’t have him around while he’s in space. 

- Bad Memory

Making the decision to leave Earth, as well as his relationship and his daughter, was a hard choice for him.  He didn’t want to leave Evie behind, if he could have, he would have brought her with him, but he couldn’t, so he did what he had to do.  While taking a job on a ship with a five year mission and being the head of security was great and exactly what he wanted in life, he looks back on the day he left with a lot of shame, because it makes him feel as though he’s failed as a parent.
