I'm an audio engineer and sound designer that works mostly in post production in film. I have studied and worked with audio for several years, and I can still remember learning new things and how exciting those things are when you first get a grasp of them. But since I was the only one of my friends interested in audio (outside of being in a band), I didnt have that encouragement from someone who knew the process.
Now I have a few friends that are dabbling in audio a little bit, and they're learning new things. I try to pass on some encouragement when they try something instead of saying "I could have done this better blah blah blah."
By all means, run them through the process of how to do things better, but let them experiment and take off the training wheels for a bit.
I guess it'd be the same for an overweight person at the gym. That person is trying something, and people should really be encouraging that.
