Today's Fridaygram: My advice to fellow entrepreneurs
I was asked me this week, ‘What advice would you give to someone starting a business?’, and I started sifting through various possible answers along the lines of: be honest with yourself about your own strengths and weaknesses and plan around those; always budget to spend more than you think you need; if you doubt your idea, always come back to the customer need and sense check it against that; keep believing in yourself and don’t give up the faith…etc, etc.
And then, it occurred to me how much time I’ve wasted listening to people give me advice on my business in the past 6 months. Now that entrepreneurialism is all the rage, I think it’s the next thing after raising children that people just can’t help themselves giving you advice on. And even though a lot of these people have been eminently experienced, and even though they have honestly had my best interests at heart, I would say most of it has been a total waste of time.
And ultimately, particularly when you are starting a business, time is money. All the while I’m sitting and nodding and taking notes on someone else’s opinion of what I’m trying to do, I’m not taking an action to drive forward my project. It’s a classic opportunity cost. So at the risk of sounding like a belligerent bull in a china shop, the best advice I can give is – balls to all the advice, just get on with it!!
Inspiring Tech Maverick Entrepreneurs
Startup incubators are pretty much popping up all over the world. With Facebook's IPO of $5 Billion, I don't think we'll see a shortage either. So what's it really like inside a bustling startup incubator?
See for yourself on February 8, 2012 via live-streaming video of the [IN]cubes start up eco-system, an incubator known for its tech mavericks. Sorry Tom Cruise!
