His eyes slipped closed at the brush of Adam’s fingers at his temple. The strands of hair were sticking to his skin with sweat, or blood. The wariness in Adam’s clear blue eyes told him it was probably the latter. 

“I am alright,” he said quietly, his hand coming up to grip Adam's still hovering at his temple and press his lips against the palm of his hand. The sector was lost, their armies retreating but they were both alive. “I am alright,” he repeated, letting his eyes slip closed as he concentrated on the warmth of his beloved’s skin.

The thought felt absurd — yet the envelope containing the papers sat on the kitchen table of their shared apartment as real as it could be. His shirt was on the floor, soon followed by the rest of their clothes — they formed a path into their bedroom. King was laughing, it was a contagious laugh and he let it take himself completely. They had just bought the old town hall from the city of Saint Denis. "Mrs. and Mr. de Passe," he said against her skin, "Aspiring entrepreneurs". 

"Visionaries," she corrected with a smile.

“Can't sleep?" (Winters)

Send me “Can’t sleep?” to have a tired conversation with my muse in the middle of the night.

He lit a cigarette and inhaled the smoke deeply. "No," he said slowly as he exhaled, sniffled and looked up at Winters summoning a smile to his tired eyes. "The couple next door was having a good time," the corner of his mouth tugged up. He could have asked for a different room, he knew but — it wasn't what truly kept him awake. He pushed himself from the railing and took a few steps onto the empty road. It was a warm night in Valentine. Ouija was spending the night in the stables. He turned back to look at Winters, "Come on a ride with me?" maybe there was a bit of hopefulness in his voice.
