I don't understand how leather can be both biodegradable and last for generations. Either it breaks down easily or it doesnt.
Also, if it lasts so long, why do we have to keep producing more?
Leather produced using modern tanning methods is not actually biodegradable, it's a claim repeated over and over without anyone in the chain bothering to look it up. The tanning process is wildly unsustainable and produces many toxic chemicals that make their way into waterways, tanneries are infamously dirty places I've no idea how anyone landed on the idea that anything about this process is environmentally friendly. That's not even discussing the GHG emissions, resource and land use it takes to actually get the cow to slaughter weight in the first place.
The environmental claims, then, rest solely longevity. Tumblr has decided to collectively pretend all their leather is 50 years old and was passed down to them by their grandparents, just like they all pretend all their meat is locally produced none of them are buying factory farmed animal products. The fact is that most leather is fast fashion, the same as plastic.
The latest hail mary has been 'but indigenous practices aren't as bad!' which would be great, if that's where anyone was actually buying their leather from. As it stands it’s nothing more than hiding behind indigenous people to justify their own completely unrelated purchases - again. The facts don't really matter though, confirmation bias means that people will uncritically believe and spread just about anything so long as it’s what they want to hear.
