hey trash expert! do you have ideas how we should manage our waste crisis rn

I just work in this space but I am by no means an expert but here's my opinion:

we need both systems change and behaviour change to manage the waste/climate crisis. systems change is changes to manufacturing processes and corporate/industrial sustainability, behaviour change is changes to how we consume and interact. Systems change is the hurricane outside that we need to find a way to mitigate; behaviour change is us sweeping the water out of our house with a broom. the most important impact will be to stop the hurricane, but if we stop sweeping the house will flood before we get there

What do you Love about Earth?

There are a million things I could talk about here, but one thing i find so beautiful about our world is the sheer depth of complexity

If you take any patch of land or any piece of habitat, big or small, seemingly empty or packed with life. If you look hard enough, you'll almost invariably discover that it contains an endlessly deep web of influences and interactions!

Any piece of soil is an impossibly complex mixture created from the actions of a thousand different organisms, large and small, acting on the chemical cycles of the air, the water, the rocks

And the rocks themselves are incredibly dense with information! From charting the literal history of our environment, to the preserved final moments of creatures that lived tens of millions of years ago, to affecting how we humans live on the land right now.

And this pattern holds true almost anywhere you try and look, whether that's large-scale weather systems or food webs I first learned about in primary school.

No matter how far you zoom in or out, there is always just so much more to see, and I dont know if I'll ever get over that fact.

just a reminder that if you teach agricultural studies and environmental science but refuse to listen to your low income students of color while removing the units about environmental racism and gentrification from the curriculum, you should never be allowed to work in the field ever again. ❤️

Plastic Rain Is the New Acid Rain

Researchers find that over 1,000 metric tons of microplastic fall on 11 protected areas in the US annually, equivalent to over 120 million plastic water bottles.

so I’m in my enviro science class and we’re talking about dams and reseviors, right? and human alterations to the earth.

and my prof goes 

“Not all human altercation to the earth is bad. The amount of lives that have been saved by dams and artificial structures like that is much greater than the lives taken by the affects of global warming and such so its not that bad”

AND LIKE???? I DON’T HAVE AN ENST DEGREE OR ANYTHING BUT THAT DOESN’T SOUND RIGHT????
