Dedication of Mars Intarabus
Ernzen, Germany
early 2nd century CE
The god revered here is Intarabus - a local Gallic deity of the resident Treverer that in the interpretatio romana was equated with Mars. He was the protector of the fields and agriculture, as well as the borders.
The identification of the deity revered here made possible a partly preserved inscription:
(Marti In) tarabo (aediculam) sua impensa .... L. Germanius (restituit) ... .us d (ono) d (edit)
In translation:
The (Mars I) ntarabus has given L. Germanius ... .us (a chapel) at his own expense (renewed) and given to the gift.
Originally the temple probably contained a life-size cult statue of the god or a relief, as was customary, but this is not preserved.
