Shouyou truly hadn't been paying attention to Noya and Tanaka's conversation until it was directed at him. Most of the team was involved at that point, focused on their discussion as they stretched, but Shouyou had been too busy thinking about the cool techniques he watched on the Adlers match last night. Maybe Kageyama would help later if he begged hard enough.
“What about you?” Noya asked. Hinata dragged himself from his daydream where Kageyama was agreeable for once and they executed the new move on one try. He looked up from his straddle to see everyone watching him. “If you could date anyone at the school, who would it be? Doesn't have to be realistic.”
“Huh.” Shouyou leaned into his stretch and thought for a moment. “Probably Kageyama.”
In his opinion, the shouts of disbelief and laughter that followed were entirely unjustified.
On the court, the ball Kageyama had set to himself dropped onto his head. “What the hell?”
“He said it didn't have to be realistic!” Shouyou protested.
“Why would you say me, though?”
“Well,” Shouyou began, pulling his legs into a butterfly pose, “if we were dating, you'd have to be nice to me. And toss to me whenever I want.”
“And,” Shouyou continued loudly over him, “I obviously can't date someone who doesn't love volleyball as much as I do, so Kageyama is really the only choice,” he finished to Noya, who grinned down at him.
“That's a great answer! Very well thought out!”
“Then you could play volleyball on your dates,” Tsukishima drawled from the bench. “You probably couldn't do that with anyone else because the King is the only person who would find that romantic.”
“Exactly! Volleyball dates would be the best kind!”
“But how is that different from all the times you two already practice together?” Suga pointed out.
“You can't have a date at the school gym! I guess we'd have to go somewhere else. Like the park.” Parks were romantic, right? Then you could have a picnic after.
Suga scrunched his forehead. “So, if you played volleyball with Kageyama somewhere else, it would count as a date to you?”
“Uhhh.” Shouyou had lost the conversation somewhere. “Yes?”
Taukishima and Yamaguchi snickered to one another. Yeah, he was definitely missing something. He looked around, but everyone else seemed to be in on the joke.
“Alright, enough of these shenanigans. Let's get started with some laps,” Daichi announced. Shouyou followed his gaze to Kageyama, who was looking very red.
Shouyou jogged over to him. “Ready?”
“For what?” Shouyou mimicked. He made sure to make his voice sound very annoying and Kageyama-like. “To race, Bakageyama!”
“Who says I want to race you?”
Shouyou frowned. “But we always race.”
“Yeah, well. Maybe that's a dating-only perk now.”
“So's telling me you would date me in front of the whole team!” Kageyama fired back.
“That's different,” Shouyou whined. “It's not like that. I was just saying hypothetically.”
“So you wouldn't want to date me?”
“That's not what I meant! I meant—ugh, you know what I meant!”
“No, I don't,” Kageyama said. Then he sped off.
“Hey! Wait! I didn't know you were gonna start!”
“Catch up already!” Kageyama hollered back.
Shouyou started running and yelled, “If I win, will you date me?”
He was still behind Kageyama, which meant he got the special pleasure of seeing the flawless King of the Court stumble and almost—almost—trip.
“Just try and beat me, and then you'll find out!”
