I was experimenting with incidental rhythms and the layering of them to see what kind of repeating patterns and polyrhythms would emerge, with some sculptural and atmospheric layering of sounds and textures throughout.

I tried to play with expectations on tension/release, purposefully creating moments which may unnerve listeners, or at least make them less inclined to lapse into a mode of prediction and more aware and conscious of the listening process itself.

"Visual Sounds" was given a more beat-driven approach, with some mind of pop compositional tendencies compared to the free-wheeling abstract avant-garde auspices of "EDEP". I still played with incidental/poly rhythms and differing time signatures.

As the name applies there was an approach at creating sounds that would conjure visual images, primarily landscapes (with one track being called "Landscape" and sounding like some kind of industrial factory).

Experiments like "Numb Face" and "Make Love With War" were created to subdue and warp equally, contrasting soft textures and harsh ragged tones akin to an audio version of the ripped jeans look, which intentionally engage and challenge the listener.

I had been writing a lot of hip-hop stuff between this and the last EP so there are some influences sprinkled throughout. I feel some of the compositions are more tuned to an actual song-like structure, rather than experimental illustrative pieces, but I pepper throughout some playful notions of sound and rhythm, plus the usual "fuck shit up" attitude.

Due to some new features in the software, new plugins and better knowledge of what I was doing, I was able to deconstruct and cut up the sounds more than previously. I ended up playing with themes of degradation, intentionally griming up some areas of the tracks and pushing the software to treat the sounds non-musically in the search for the space between rhythmic coma and conscious awareness. That said, be careful playing "Spark Shooter" on decent stereo equipment!

It reached an extreme where one of the songs (not included) was so badly treated with the audio that it rendered 5 minutes and 51 seconds of silence (ironically the track was titled "When Words Are Too Much"). I really regret losing the original files and have no memory of what that track sounded like!
