Lightning reach the final of the EPL Cup
Wednesday evening saw Manchester Phoenix make the trip to Milton Keynes to play Lightning in the 2nd leg of the English Premier League Cup semi final. Lightning had an impressive 8-2 lead going into the game. Phoenix were without Jaakko Hagelburg (suspended) starting goaltenders were Fone for Phoenix and Mettam for Lightning.
Lightning didn't waste any time with captain Adam Carr (assisted by Micheal Wales and Nick Poole) opening the scoring at just 1:20, with Phoenix looking on rather stunned! 8 minutes in and Andre Smulter was taken down by a very late hit from Andre Payette. Payette got 2 minutes for charging and Smulter had to be helped off the ice. (he tried skating 1 shift, but was in too much discomfort to continue and had to have his shoulder wrapped in ice and missed the rest of the game) Lightning quickly added a second, a PPG scored at 9:34 by Ross Bowers (assisted by Nick Poole and Leigh Jamieson). Second period, Phoenix scored at 28:54 with a goal from Bowie (assisted by Lachowicz and Wood) but Lightning answered 3 minutes later with Micheal Wales making it 3-1 with a fabulous unassisted goal at 31:51. Courtney (assisted by Wallace and Graham) added another for Phoenix at 37:52 with Lightning leading 3-2 going into the 3rd.
Phoenix added another goal at the 53:50 mark, scored by Lachowicz (assisted by Courtney and Hand). Final score 3-3, no overtime was played due to it being the 2nd leg of the semi final, and Lightning won 11-5 overall. Final shots on goal were 27 on Mettam and 33 on Fone. Lachowicz earned MOM for Phoenix and Mettam for Lightning. This wasn't the greatest game of hockey and neither team played at their best (although Phoenix looked a much improved team) but Lightning are through to the final and will play either Slough Jets or Guildford Flames.
