Russell, of course, takes to the bed like a duck to water, just as everyone else does to their own shortly after... or almost everyone. For something else the elders have been doing, even more lately than initially, is staying up far later than they should be. Apparently, as muddled as their minds are, they still race as fast at night as they did when their thinking was sharp - not helped by it being a self-sustaining cycle, late nights begetting late mornings begetting more late nights.
Laurel: “Oh, Amelia, I think you’ve got something on your mouth there.”
Amelia: “I do? I swear I washed my face after--”
Laurel: *kisses*
Amelia: “--oh. That kind of thing... mmhm.” *kisses back*
The reasons are logical; their activities, usually benign. But it tends to matter not -
Amelia: “There! Do you think you got it all?”
Laurel: “Got all of what? ...oh, not quite. Might be a little more--”
Eplis: *with a yawn* “Just clean your teeth and go to bed, Bibi! Geez!!”
- with a Light Sleeper in the same room.
Russell: “Sose, feels funny - think I’m-- whoa!”
...
Russell: “Holy cow! Guys, did you see that? I think I just pulled off one of Sophie’s soccer spins!”
Eplis: “That happens every birthday. ‘s not that big a deal, you know?”
Russell: “Yeah, but mine was the coolest so far!! ...I mean. Probably.”
On top of his original traits of Disciplined and Sailor (so you can imagine how much Sophie influenced his vocabulary), Russell rolled Slob! That might sound bad, but considering it means he’s not gonna be affected by bad hygiene as heavily as the others will, that’s going to be SO useful in the long run, and definitely solidifies him as a serious heir contender.
Welp. First to grow, first to see what the fuss is about, right?
So she snatches the paper up - plus today’s, which happens to be nearby - and sneaks upstairs with them. She’s sated enough in other regards to afford it; and it looks like Laurel got to the bread safe and sound, in any case.
Eplis: “Mmgh... Really starting to realize how much I don’t like jam, Soph. It’s all... bitty.”
Sophie: *sympathetically* “I know, but we’ve all gotta put up with it. Just one more bite, yeah?”
Eplis: “Oh yeah, I’m not gonna turn it down! Just don’t--” *chews* “--like ‘t.” *swallows* “’Kay, who’s next?”
Sophie: “Russell, then me. Then we- Oh, shit, that reminds me, can you distract Bibi for me when they come down? I wanna make sure Mom eats today and I don’t want them gettin’ to it first.”
Eplis: “A’ight. ...” *slides into the computer seat* “Juuuust let me finish the next chapter of my draft fir--”
Sophie: “EPLIS!”
Eplis: “Kidding! I’m kidding!”
Sophie: *only half as stern as she’d like to be* “So I should think. C’mon, Russ, time for your share.”
The one sucky thing about Eplis’s special day was, just to remind you, it fell on a Sunday. Hence, no money for breakfast to give his growing bones a substantial meal afterwards.
Sophie: “Don’t wo- seriously, Eplis, quit worrying Bibi, I’ve got this. We’ll just have to stretch out one bread and jam between us, like they used to.”
Amelia: “You remember that? I don’t remember that...”
Sophie: “Yeah! It was when I was a toddler. Mom used to get the jam out and make sure you--”
Eplis: “Wait, where is Mom? Ze was in here a second ago.”
Sophie: “Shit, ze’d better not’ve -- Mom! Get out of the pantry! It’s gonna lock you in there!”
Laurel: “Yes, I got some ice cream from the fridge for--”
Sophie: “That’s not ice cream, Mom, that’s freezer burn, now get the fuck outta there!!”
Laurel: “But ice cream :(”
Sophie needn’t worry, honestly. As long as Eplis’s sitting at that computer, typing away, she isn’t budging for anything except bathroom breaks, and even that’s under duress.
Eplis: “--computer parts? Cus it’s gotta have parts, right? ...ooh, maybe I could make him into--”
Russell: “Whoa, cool!! Is this the computer thing Bibi was on about?”
Eplis: “Yep.” *keeps typing*
Russell: “Neat! ...uh, can I go through, Eplis?”
Eplis: “No! I don’t want you trying to delete my novels! Mom already tried that and--”
Russell: “I won’t! I just wanna play on the hopscotch. Honest!”
Eplis: “...”
---
Russell: “Bobby Shaftoe’s gone to sea, silv-- Yes, I’m still playing, Eplis! You can stop checking in on me now.”
Eplis: *ducks behind the pole* “What? No! You didn’t see nothin’!”
Still, however long it takes, with all their flirtin’ and starin’ and cleanin’ and general autonomous activity, they do get to bed eventually... even if it ends up not being til midnight sometimes.
It’s ironic, don’t you think? Amelia’s finally letting themselves be a Night Owl again at an age where they can do literally fucking nothing with it.
Or am I misusing irony again?
