Heute waren wir in Erawan und haben uns die dortigen Wasserfälle angeschaut. Man muss sagen, dass sich der 1 ½ Stunden Aufstieg definitiv gelohnt hat. Der oberste Wasserfall der insgesamt 7., War wie man auf dem Bild sieht sehr beeindruckend! Schwimmen könnte man auch in den vom Wasser gebildeten Becken. Allerdings muss man dann in Kauf nehmen, dass in Windeseile ein Schwarm von Fischen vor Ort ist und an einem herumknabbert.

KANCHANABURI AND ERAWAN WATERFALLS

After our adventurous Christmas and the whole hospital thing (Luckily we have travel insurance...) Freya was finally dismissed and we decided to stick around Bangkok for a few days.

Bangkok, the real name being "Krung thep mahanakhon amorn ratanakosin mahintharayutthaya mahadilok popnoparat ratchathani burirom udomratchanivetmahasathan amornpiman avatarnsathit sakkathattiyavisnukarmprasit" (the world's longest location name by the Guinness Book of Records), and in English: "The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city of Ayutthaya of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn", it has over 11 million people living in it plus God knows how many tourists roaming its streets every day and I don't even want to know how many hotels, hostels or guesthouses to accommodate us and still, while going down to reception at our hostel I bumped into Debbi coming up the stairs.

Freya and I met her while travelling around New Zealand in March 2014 and shared a good two weeks on the road between both the South and North Islands with her and another bunch of lovely people. And now almost two years later we're staying in the same hostel in Bangkok... Small world? Just wait for the end of this post.

Anyway after going to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens in IMAX 4D (it was amazing by the way) inside the best shopping centre we've ever been (EM Quartier, in the Sukhumvit area) we left Bangkok and decided to take the chance to tick another thing off our to-do list for Thailand: the Erawan National Park, home of the 7-tier Erawan Waterfalls and only 4 hours north-west of the Capital.

Kanchanaburi, the main city in the province, was going to be our (boring) base for three days and there we spent New Years where - good guess - absolutely nothing happened apart from some fireworks and someone being sick all night in a bungalow next to us (maybe there was a party somewhere after all...). We didn't mind though, after the worst Christmas ever we didn't really feel like partying for NYE anyway and also Freya is off the booze and nobody likes to be the only sober person in town so quiet night for us instead. I got myself a haircut and a large beer in an Australian beer cosy on 1st January though because YOLO.

Before that though on the last day of 2015 we headed to the National Park and reached the waterfalls: now the first few tiers (1 to 4 really) were not that great: the pools and surrounding areas were definitely overcrowded with many families having picnics and loads of kids screaming and running around - and did I say screaming? -, the hike was more like a procession and at times the line along the path would go on real slow and then the waterfalls were actually not that impressive anyway but as of level 5 (half an hour hike) things got better.

Past this point it would have been another 45 minutes to the top level and once to the top we were glad we came.

Most people wouldn't venture up here and even though there was still quite a few of us going up the hill the hike became more of a pleasant walk through the forest with many water crossings, rocky bits and wooden stairs to challenge our (poor) trekking skills. We choose to head straight for level 7 and finally reached the waterfalls and the pool where we enjoyed a freezing cold natural shower and a quick dip (just Freya, I chickened out) amongst some of the same fish we met at that fish spa in Chiang Mai, only these were massive and the tickling was unbearable.

On our way back we were almost out of gas with a good 40 km left to Kanchanaburi and when we finally came across a gas station we had the weirdest petrol-filling experience ever. We only needed half a tank to get back but the kid running the gas station refused to serve us because we weren't going to get enough petrol for his liking. Didn't matter that I said please like a million times and that we hardly had any gas left in the scooter. It wasn't gonna happen. I wanted to go full Italian on him but we kept our cool instead and took our chances and drove off. Luckily, when we were basically ready to push (with pride) for the remaining 30 km we found another gas station a few kilometres down the road, and then another one and then another one and so on all the way to town.

At sunset we went to the Bridge over the River Kwai which is a bridge over a river called Kwai Yai. It was packed with people being New Years Eve so we couldn't fully experience or understand the history of this site which is a pretty sad and interesting one: part of the infamous Death Railway to Burma this iron bridge was built by prisoners of war working in hellish conditions for the Japanese during World War II and some 16000 of them plus another 90000 enslaved Asian workers died during its construction.

We (I) didn't know any of this and unfortunately we (I) just walked up and down it while munching on unbranded and tasteless crackers being that kind of tourists. Oops.

We're now back in Bangkok for the night and while struggling to resist the temptation to go watch Star Wars again we've figured out what to do next: Vietnam. We'll pretend we've done Laos the way we were going to do it (we'll maybe head back there one day) and are now catching up with the original itinerary and starting again from where we should have been anyway which is exactly Hanoi heading south afterwards.

Oh and of course it wouldn't be Bangkok if I didn't accidentally bumped into someone I know, in this case Moreno, an old friend of mine from Milan which I've known for a good fifteen years. We bumped into each other just outside the shopping centre because apparently this is what you do in Bangkok.

Erawan Waterfalls, Kanchanaburi --One of the places I missed out on while I was living in Thailand, but I am so glad I got to go hike it this time around. I had a hard time getting in the water at first because of the skin-sucking fish that live in it (you know, the ones you've heard about in Thai foot spas), but the weather is SO hot and HUMID out here and the water too turquoise to say no so I had to suck it up and go! (If you don't want the fish to suck your body just keep swimming!) These are the beautiful turquoise waters of the 3rd tier of waterfalls (out of 7).
