Operation Olive Tree: How Greece Saves Centuries-Old Trees from Destruction

More than 500 olive trees, some of which are centuries-old, have been saved so far by the almost unknown efforts of ERGOSE.

ERGOSE is a subsidiary company of TRAINOSE, the Greek Railway Operator, and its role is to construct and maintain the railway network of the country.

Since 2014, the company has been coordinating its efforts with the local authorities to save venerable olive trees.

Why is the Olive Tree Important? The olive tree has been associated with Greece for millennia.

It symbolizes peace and prosperity, as well as the hope of resurrection and prosperous life. The purely Mediterranean Greek landscape is dotted with olive trees, and Greeks throughout the centuries have been inextricably linked with this plant.

For Ancient Greeks, the olive tree was one of two of the most respected mythical trees, along with the oak.

This deeply rooted love and respect shown by the Greeks has survived throughout the centuries.

New Electrified Athens - Thessaloniki Railway Line Complete

The new electrified railway line from Athens to Thessaloniki is ready for use and will be put into operation today, January 29, according to a statement issued by the company responsible for the upgrade.

According to the state-run AMNA news agency, all the work that was needed for the entire length of the line to be electrified is now complete. The rail project was accomplished under the auspices of the ERGOSE company, a part of TRAINOSE, Greece’s only railway concern.

The stretch of railway between Lianokladi and Domokos, an especially treacherous section of the line due to its mountainous terrain, is now fully electrified.

However, the Lianokladi-Domokos portion of the rail line will continue to operate with diesel trains for another month, until the new signals and electric line have been fully tested.

“With these projects, ERGOSE has completed a flagship project for the construction of the new railway line on the country’s main “Piraeus-Athens-Thessaloniki” rail axis,” ERGOSE announced in their statement.

The statement noted that this vital upgrade will now provide Greece with “a modern and fully inter-operable double-electrified railway line.”

TRAINOSE is now owned by the Italian company ”Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane.”

New railway  “Patras – Pyrgos – Kalamata” in the Region of Western Greece

On Sunday 14th of February the Railways Organisation ERGOSE and the Region of Western Greece will present the study for the new railway between Patras, Pyrgos and Kalamata towns. Mr. Athanassios Vourdas, ERGOSE’s CEO, will present the study to the public sector, the local authorities and the general public during the event that will take place in Pyrgos  Ileias.

Mr. Apostolos Katsifaras, the Head of the Region of Western Greece, stated: “the re-opening of the railway line of Patras – Pyrgos – Kalamata, which was closed for several years, is imperative for the transport network of Western Greece, especially for Achaia and Ileia”.
