There are many jokes about how to know you’ve been in China too long, and perhaps the most relevant one would be: “You know you’ve been in China too long when you enjoy a nice glass of Bai Jiu.” #baijiu ranges from spicy to slightly milder tastes. There are numerous brands of Chinese Bai Jiu, and two of the most well-known, and perhaps you will hear most are #maotai and #erguotou .#whitewine #wine #winelover https://www.instagram.com/p/BoF264EgUdf/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=a5sl9y6c21yz

ITEM 029: Empty bottle of Beijing Red Star Erguotou Found on: 6/15/15 Materials: ceramic, glaze, paint Damage/wear: missing top and erguotou Provenance: Red Star distillery, 1 Honxing Rd., Huairou District, Beijing, China Production details: This bottle was perhaps manufactured, but definitely filled, at the Red Star Distillery inBeijing. Red Star was founded in 1949 by the Chinese Central Tax Office, and was supposed to be affordable, an “alcohol of the people.” An Italian man who studied in China observes on his blog that Red Star recently went through a partial rebranding, with more modern-looking bottle design, and laments: While icons of old communist China fade away, nowadays a lot of consumers have a vein of nostalgia for the old times, when life was simple, people were honest, and the revolutionary spirit was pure. It happens for the elders who have been living in Mao’s era, but also for the post 80s, who often dig in their childhood memories to find peace from the frenzy of booming metropolis. Erguotou is a strong liquor that is considered the “table wine” of Beijing, made from a ~800 year old recipe involving fermented sorghum. It is a relatively strong drink; the strongest erguotou the distillery produces is 56% ABV. It is also a type of baiju, a class of Chinese alcohol made from fermented grains. The Red Star distillerythat this bottle came from accounts for 25% of China’s overall baijiu production. The distillery also doubles as a museum in which visitors can ogle large fermenting vats while their kids enjoy a playhouse. In a YouTube video of a rather bro-ish American guy taking a tour of the distillery, this bottle appears at 0:44. The distillery is on the outskirts of Huairou, a mid-sized town, and next to some farms. This bottle’s identity was found by searching what may be a type of serial number on its base, which led to a photo of a similar bottle, with its box, on a Chinese forum (that page no longer exists). Date or date range: unknown Still in production: yes Rare: no Still attainable from: Alibaba Value: $133.33 for 20 bottles Use: Erguotou is a strong liquor that is considered the “table wine” of Beijing. Someone drank the erguotou that was in this bottle. Since it was found in a gift bag, and represents a slightly nicer bottle than the usual, one might presume that it was given as a gift. However, it would be strange to drink the alcohol, and then put it back in the gift bag.
