??? POV
'Run. Just keep running.' A small girl with whitish hair repeated over and over in her head ignoring the pain she felt in her legs, the cuts on her body didn't help, but she forced herself to keep going. She couldn't take it anymore the endless cutting apart and being put back together, it hurt so much she just wants to not be in pain anymore.
"Eri"
No, please no she's so close she could see sunlight, "Somebody. Anybody, please." Eri pleaded no begged at this point. She used the rest of her strength to reach the glowing light.
Only to be knocked down by a person in the way. No, she was so close this time this couldn't be—
"Whoa, you okay there kid?"
Eri looked up only to be blinded by the light around her. When her eyes adjusted to the light she was able to looked at the man she rammed into he was wearing nice-looking clothes, at least nicer than what she was wearing, with dark messy navy hair and matching eyes and he was holding a book, a very old book with some kind of symbol.
When he put away his book into his coat to knelt down to her level her nerves went on high alert. She's only know a few things from him one of them being that when he was calm it usually leads to danger, or that he was in a good mood which leads to an even more painful danger.
"You took quite the fall you okay?"
As soon as Eri saw his hand reach towards her she braced to feel any sort of pain only to be met with a gentle hold as she was picked up and set on the ground.
"There you go right back up again. Now are you good, you're shaking quite a bit. Where are your parents?"
Eri couldn't answer even if she wanted to she knew better than to answer. Answering would just lead to more confusion on her part. She already knew the drill the correct answer will always be that it's her fault and that she was a curse, but she was too tired to answer when she already knew what would happen after.
All she could do was look around for him. The world looked so different than what she saw in books or from what she remembered. How long has it been since she's been outside? She just kept turning around in fear that he would pop out of any corner. Because it was just like him to give her hope only for him to smash it into pieces.
"—id, Kid, HEY!"
Eri flinched not realizing how hard she was breathing. But that's when she came to a realization she couldn't hear him calling to her, nor could she hear his footsteps. Eri knew that this would most likely end up being another experiment to toy with her mental state but despite her better judgment her body grabbed hold of the man in front of her.
While she didn't know the man she could only hope that he was better than him. After all so far he hasn't done anything to hurt her and his touch didn't hurt.
"Hey kid, as much as I appreciate a free hug as the next guy. I'm sure people are going to make the wrong assumption, plus didn't your parents teach you about stranger danger?"
Just as he pulled her off him, wow she has a strong grip, she finally spoke, or rather begged, "Please…please don't go…"
Her words made him freeze as she stared to tremble in his arms. She sounded so scared. That's when the man looked down at her and his eyes widened when he got a good look at her. She could only hope that he didn't hate her just from looking at her.
The man saw how messy her white hair was, her dirty clothes that looked similar to what patients would wear, the old bandages that clearly needed to be changed covering her arms and legs that had some blood seeping through, he looked at her horn which she was surprised he didn't comment on, but what sealed the deal for the man were those big red eyes of hers. Those eyes that were filled with desperation for survival, the same eyes he saw on a boy what 4 years ago?
The man could only sigh knowing that his heart already come to a decision, as he picked her up and settled her on his hip, "Welp, guess I got another one? I hope you two can get along. You got a name kiddo?"
The tiny girl could barely speak above a whisper, "…Eri" before retreating into the man's shoulder.
"Eri huh, nice name kid." Eri didn't know what the man said next feeling so tired after all that running but she was able to catch his name. "The name's Regto."
Eri didn't know why she trusted the man all she knew was that he felt safe and his hands felt warm and gentle she didn't even realize she fell asleep against the man—Regto's shoulder. For once in her life she felt like she was safe.
'Regto's POV
If someone had told me 5 years ago that I would end up adopting two white-haired, red-eyed, scarred children I probably would've made that person check themselves into a physic ward because who would trust me to take care not one but two kids. Yet here I am with a clearly malnourished girl hanging onto me for dear life.
Luckily no one seems to question why he was carrying an unconscious girl back to his place……on the other hand he was quite concerned about no one questioning why he was taking an unconscious girl back to his home but that's something for future Regto to stare at the ceiling at night to worry about.
For now, he needed to get this girl some food or medicine or really anything because she looks like a single breeze could blow her away.
What kind of parents—no scratch that the people who allow this to happen shouldn't even be called that? What kind of inhumane creature did this little girl have to deal with?
Regto snapped out of his thoughts when Eri started in the little makeshift bed he made for her on the couch (he's fine with sleeping on the couch, it's fine!)
"No…please no more…"
If Regto's heart wasn't broken when she begged the first time it definitely was now. He carefully moved toward the sleeping girl as he started shaking her awake. "Eri, Eri, wake up—"
It didn't take much for the little girl to gasp awake before shrinking away upon seeing Regto covering her body with the blanket Regto placed on her.
Regto was now more worried for Eri, no kid should have to react like that. But he knew better than anyone else that he couldn't force her to tell him what happened only time would tell. All he could do now was to make sure that she knew that she was safe now.
"Hey, hey, it's me Regto remember?"
The small girl peaked under the covers before launching herself at the man. "Oof—well that didn't take as much convincing as I thought it would." Regto tried to joke only to be responded with tears.
"…thank you…THANK YOU" Eri just repeated the mantra as all Regto could do was hold her as she cried.
