Eric Johansson (1896 Dresden - 1979 Täby/Sweden), Sucide, 1922, painting on canvas, 80 x 60 cm.
Eric Johansson, son of Swedish parents, grew up with his foster father Robert Schäfer in Dresden. 1912-20 studied at the local academy under Gußmann, Sterl, Zwintscher, Bantzer and von Hofmann. Artist friendship with Otto Griebel, both of whom took part in the Congress of the International Workers' Aid in Weimar in 1923 as active communists. With Otto Nagel, Johansson was one of the organizers of the "1st General German Art Exhibition" in Moscow, Leningrad and Saratov in 1924 and became a member of the "Red Group" in the same year. As a representative of Verism and New Objectivity, he is considered to have had an extremely influential style in taking up contemporary critical themes and motifs while modifying expressionist means. Even before Hans Grundig, he used woodcuts to precisely depict and evaluate social realities. His oil painting “Factory” was shown in the Dresden exhibition “Degenerate Art” in 1933 and was later confiscated. In 1938 he was expelled from Germany and fled to Sweden.
