Progressive Christians are Christians who want to be better and do better. The problem with progressive Christians is that they are more invested in how they are perceived than in effecting change. In other words, progressive Christians put more work into statements, websites, and worship sets than they put into anti-racism, decolonizing or inclusion. When progressive Christians do work, it is in the arena of social justice, and it is almost always both visible and marketable. Progressive Christianity cannot exist without systemic injustice because oppression is the marker against which progressive Christians measure their progress. Progressive Christianity is invested in oppression. If injustices are undone, then a part of the progressive Christian identity has also been undone. They work for LESS injustice; they do not work for justice. The progressive Christian project depends on and is deeply invested in trauma. Trauma is capital for the white savior complex of progressive Christianity. Without trauma - without oppression - progressive Christianity cannot exist. Progressive Christianity uses its 'understanding' of trauma as a way to market itself and gain access to opportunities, to groups, and to relationships. It is difficult to challenge progressive Christianity because its view of trauma objectifies the traumatized who must be 'saved.' Progressive Christianity thinks it is a good neighbor. Progressive Christianity cannot imagine its need for salvation, let alone a Savior.
