Disney Television Studios Head Eric Schrier Hints 20th Television Animation And Likely Disney Television Animation Working In More "YA Animation" Projects.
This week, DEADLINE had an interview with Disney Television Studios head Eric Schrier on his status as CEO of Disney Television Studios which covers 20th Television, FX Studios, 20th Television Animation, Disney Branded Television and Disney Television Animation.
During the interview the topic of animation was covered mostly dedicated to 20th Television Animation like the FOX mega-renewal deal, The Great North future, bringing back iconic IPs like Futurama and King Of The Hill and finding the next biggest adult animated after however Eric Schrier mentioned that 20th Television Animation is developing many animated projects for a Young Adult audience for Disney+. (Likely in collaboration with Disney Television Animation)
DEADLINE: What about animated originals beyond the legacy shows? Currently, you have Solar Opposites, which is ending, and The Great North, which likely is ending too. What do you have in the pipeline? SCHRIER: I’m really excited about the stuff that Marci and her team are working on. We have projects in the pipeline that I’m really looking forward to...... We are the most prolific studio in adult animation, and our plan is to continue to do that, working hard with our Hulu partners and our Disney+ partners, because I think there’s some shows that we can do In the animation space, more adult for Hulu or young adult for Disney+, that I feel really good about, but I don’t want to speak about any specific project.
While Schrier couldn't give details we know that the first project of this is the upcoming stop-motion musical comedy series "Rhona Who Lives By The River" created by Emily Kapnek (Nickelodeon Animation Studios "As Told By Ginger") and EP by Karen Gillian (James Gunn & Marvel Studios "Guardians Of The Galaxy" franchise) and Danny Elfman (Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas", Netflix "Wednesday", Warner Bros "The Corpse Bride", "Beetlejuice", Beetlejuice") with Gillian as the lead role. Gillian mentioned in Spring 2023 mentioning that Elfman was starting the songwritting process of the series.
Rhona is the first collaboration between Disney Television Animation and 20th Television Animation with Stoopid Buddy Stoodios ("Mickey Saves Christmas" "Mickey And Friends: Trick Or Treats") as animation services.
