Imagine you're Gareth and your unique brand of "flirting via weather updates" has worked on exactly 0 men so far. That is until you meet an autistic detective with a special interest in mushrooms who folds like a deck chair when you mention rising sea levels.

You successfully "there's a storm coming" (lol) flirt him into bed, not once but twice. Now you're both slamming each other around a hotel room and then having the best sleep of your entire life.

I need the tea on these two because what do you mean that the one night they spent together was so good that they both still remember it three years later?? Like, it was so good that round two was immediately on the table despite them both having actual jobs to do. Let’s pause this police investigation/save the town from flooding so I can get my back blown out again.

The Eric and Gareth scene debrief, lets get into it:

Firstly, I'm obsessed with the scene they had together - it had everything including Diva Gareth and “I’m one second away from a mental breakdown” Eric.

I swear the show better not do me dirty because this scene showed how perfect they are for each other. Eric needs someone that he can't bulldozer over with his "facts over feelings" and Gareth needs someone that will take him and his interests seriously.

"Gareth"

Said with such nervousness and trepidation, which is nothing like how Erics been with everyone else. This was him trying to be vulnerable, he knows he's been acting like a dick to Gareth.

"I just wondered if I could apologise for my behaviour..."

Eric asking if he can apologise and not just apologising puts the focus on permission to speak rather than on taking responsibility which leads us to...

"I've no idea, can you?"

DIVA GARETH ACTIVATED.

Gareth is in his "standing up for myself" era and I love that for him. So far he's been laughed at by the town, had his house broken into, his head bashed in and then had to go live in a pub. Add to this Eric spectacularly crashing out every time they meet, he's had a rough week.

"It's like the fundamentals aren't there with you Eric."

I've got to say as an autistic person this one hurt, especially after the "as an actual human being" line. I know it's not been confirmed that Eric is autistic but anyone with a pair of eyes can see that he is. And on top of this, we have the childhood trauma/co-dependant relationship with Jackie/investigation burnout. The shouting match with Jackie revealed a lot about how he’s struggled to connect with people. Eric is trying to do/say the right thing but he has no frame of reference to know what this is, which is why we've had the all the robotesque like behaviour.

"I know you're looking for some kind of a connection but I am not doing this, whatever this is, figure yourself out."

Gareth was entirely valid at blowing up at Eric HOWEVER it just shows that there are real feelings there from both sides. He wouldn't be so pissed at Eric if he saw it as just a one night stand. Two one night stands in four years and then they’ve only been back in each others lives for a week. You don’t get this pressed if you’re not wanting something more than what’s being offered. Gareth doesn’t want to be a place holder whilst Eric figures his shit out or used until Eric moves on again.

I really really hope this (and the shouting match with Jackie) gives Eric the push he needs to be open and vulnerable.

The suit each other do much it’s insane so don’t do me dirty producers!!
