Impulse of the Heart

In his heart he had known the second he’d set eyes on the squirming mass of Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever puppies he wouldn’t be able to leave the farm without one. Art didn’t see how anyone could when such big, pale blue eyes were set onto such sweet faces. The first order of business had been picking out only one. He’d spent at least half an hour laboring over the choices before he’d settled on a cheerful male. When Arthur had gathered him into his arms he didn’t hesitate to cuddle closer for kisses. It had been the right choice. But he had been hesitant to bring the farm dog home until a proper check-up. It had taken a few calls but he found a clinic that could schedule him in today which led to this moment.
Arthur crooned in soft comfort to the curious but cautious dog as he circled the cold steel table. He stood on his haunches and planted both paws on his chest with a whimper. “It’s alright,” he whispered as he scratched him behind the ears just as the door opened. “You’ll be fine, Buddy.” Arthur squished his face between both hands and rubbed his cheeks with his thumbs before looking to the door. There stood a man he assumed must be the veterinarian seeing as how the two of them had already met the assistant earlier. He flashed a quick smile before his attention was drawn away once more by the newest addition of his household. “Afternoon.” Squirming in his hands he moved the puppy to stand in the center of the table instead with another comforting pat.
