Switzerland’s Wealthiest Man Rescues Aston Martin in Hard Times

The wealthiest man from one of the world’s richest countries, Ernesto Bertarelli has quite recently taken a stake in Aston Martin. Known to be the most extravagant man in Switzerland, the 54-year-old came to the rescue of the British luxury car manufacturing company, which has recently been struggling for funds.

On April 17, a regulatory filing confirmed that Bertarelli has acquired 3.4 per cent of the shares in Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings Plc. As per the records, he has no shortage of subsidies and a family fortune estimated at $18.1 billion, which majorly comes from pharmaceuticals.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, a large portion of the Bertarelli family's fortune originated from the sale of Serono, a fertility drug producer, to Merck for $ 8.6 billion, in 2006. Most of the proceeds have been reinvested through Geneva-based family entity, Waypoint. Its assets are known to include commercial real estate in London and Switzerland, along with a technology-focused venture fund, Forestay Capital.

The UK producer of intriguing automobiles, Aston Martin is popular for delivering the vehicles driven by the British superspy James Bond. in various movies. The firm, whose vehicles can cost as much as $3 at least million, has battled with cash inflows and large unsold inventories since its Initial Public Offering (IPO), in 2018.

In March, the organization stated that it might require additional funds, despite a £536 million ($ 670 million) capital infusion from a group led by a Canadian investor Lawrence Stroll. Not less than four investors shorted Aston Martin, anticipating a fall in the value of shares. The disclosed shorts represented 12.7 million offers, or 4.2 per cent of the organization's outstanding shares.

The car maker shut its manufacturing plant in March, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, it has been assisting the NHS healthcare staff by providing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Besides, Aston Martin has also been providing emergency car fixing option to these workers without charging them.
