PAHOA, Hawaii | Stay or go? Volcano forces choice for all in eruption zone
PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) — Hawaii’s Kilaeau volcano is forcing people in the eruption zone to make some tough decisions.
Some residents who live on the volcano slopes insist on staying to watch over their property. Others have abandoned their homes without knowing when they will be able to return. They could come back to find their houses turned to ash and buried under solid rock.
There’s no indication when the eruption might stop, or how far the lava might spread.
Edwin Montoya has lived on the slopes of Kilauea for almost a decade. His daughter’s farm is within a mandatory evacuation zone, but Montoya plans to stay there unless he is forced to leave.
Just a couple of miles up the hill, dozens of homes have been destroyed by molten rock.
