Forbidden Music
This is my favorite recording of Erwin Schulhoff’s music, performed by Daahoud Salim. It includes his piano concerto and a number of his best solo piano work. It is beautifully performed and produced.
Schulhoff was a Czech anti-Zionist Jewish communist composer whose work stands well with much of the avant-garde at the time, particularly Berg, Les Six, and the Dadaists. He was declared ‘degenerate music’ and banned in Germany, hence the album’s title. He was deported to Wülzburg in Bavaria, jailed, and died there at 48.
