Escalante Canyons and Leaving GSENM
10/20/13 – I ended up at Deer Creek campground, on the Escalante canyons side of GSENM last night. 28 degrees again this morning, but I woke to find out the Sox were going back to the World Series-though I don’t know how much of it I will see. I don’t suspect they’ll sweep the Cards this time though.
I managed a short hike after breakfast along Deer Creek. More amazing sights-different here though, at higher elevation (6500’) and more moisture. Speaking of moisture, I left the tent up to defrost and dry out, but I saw some gray clouds, so I hustled back to make sure I packed a dry tent. Of course it didn’t rain! Stopped at the Anasazi State Park Museum just up the road in Boulder,UT. It sits on a Pueblo site which is partially excavated with one area covered for display and a nice little museum and great gift shop-Christmas shopping begins!
Hated to leave GSENM-could spend weeks-may have to come back. The road to Torrey Utah was sweet-high mountains and Aspen forests. The pass coming in to town topped out at 9600’. I decided I had been without heat and hot water-as in a shower-long enough. Staying at a motel with only one other room occupied-so not quite the Bates-and found out many/most businesses in town shut down after this weekend.
Depending on driving and hiking tomorrow, may be last day in Utah.
