A 45-year-old man has been arrested after his 8-year-old son found his loaded gun in a Florida motel room, shooting dead a 1-year-old girl and injuring her 2-year-old sister, authorities said.
The shooting took place in Pensacola on Saturday night and investigators said the father tried to cover up the incident by removing the gun and suspected drugs from the room before sheriff's deputies were called to the scene.
The boy's father, Roderick Dwayne Randall, was arrested by a convicted criminal for possession of a firearm, evidence tampering, negligent negligence and inability to keep a firearm safe.
The girl killed and her sister are the daughters of Randall's friend, who was sleeping in the motel room when the shooting happened, Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said at a news conference Monday.
"Roderick leaves the hotel but leaves his gun in a closet what he apparently thought was a safe holster," Simmons said.
Simmons said Randall's son knew where his father hid the gun.
"He takes the gun out of the holster, starts playing with it, and shoots the year-old, eventually killing the year-old," Simmons said.
He said the bullet went through the baby and hit his sister. A third child in the room, the injured girl's twin, was not hurt, Simmons said.
Simmons said Randall returned to the room after the shooting. He claimed Randall removed the gun and a bag of suspect drugs from the room before returning.
"That's not how we treat our kids," Simmons said. “Our thoughts are with the rest of the families. That's ridiculous."
Simmons said Randall has a 129-page criminal record that includes 14 previous criminal convictions.
He was sentenced to Escambia County Jail on $41,000 bail.
Relatives of the deceased girl identified her as Kacey Bass.
Kacey's mother was not charged in the episode.

In the same news conference, Simmons detailed an unrelated case of another parent who was arrested over the weekend for child neglect. He announced the arrest of a 27-year-old woman who allegedly left her one-year-old son in a hot car with the windows open as she drove to a bar.
Madison Haley Hart was jailed on $15,000 bail for abandoning a child with aggravated assault, according to jail records online.
Simmons claimed Hart appeared to be drunk when she showed up at Ticket Sports Bar on Saturday night and stayed about 20 minutes. He said bar staff prevented Hart from leaving due to his declining condition and called the sheriff's office.
Simmons said MPs exercised the Myers Act, which allows law enforcement to hold people for involuntary drug addiction or alcohol treatment if they appear to be a danger to themselves or others. After agents took Hart to a medical facility, a relative of the woman contacted authorities, telling them that Hart would be with their one-year-old son and giving them a description of Hart's car.
Simmons said Hart denied going to the bar and never mentioned his son being in a car outside the club.
He said officers returned to the bar to find the child locked in a car with the windows open. When officers discovered the baby, the boy had been in the car for over an hour, Simmons said.
"We really have to break the windows to save this kid who was suffering from a heat-related illness," Simmons said, adding that Hart's son was being treated at the hospital and placed in the care of a child protection team. We can imagine the shock of the staff and MPs when we learn that there is still a one-year-old in the car in this heat.
Simmons used Randall and Hart's examples to "encourage parents to do better."
"Mrs. Hart and Mr. Randall will have their day in court," Simmons said.
It was unclear whether Hart or Randall retained or appointed defense attorneys.
