Request: Reader is a trans boy who gets picked on by some of the other Gladers for being trans, and Newt sticks up for him.
Y/N furiously brushed away the tears from his eyes, even as he could still hear the jeering and laughs aimed in his direction from some of the more idiotic gladers. That’s what he was telling himself anyway; they were idiots, and he shouldn’t listen to what they were saying. But he couldn’t help it. Especially Gally - he came up with the more creative insults, normally to do with what was in Y/N’s pants.
They just didn’t understand.
But he did understand. They hated him, all because he was different to them.
Feeling the tears welling up in his eyes again, he stood from where he was crouched over the garden and started walking brusquely over to the deadheads. At least he’d be alone in there. Before he could take more than a few steps however, he was stopped by someone calling his name, and this time it wasn’t Gally and his stupid lackeys.
Y/N turned to face Newt, hoping the blonde boy couldn’t see the tears in his eyes or the redness in his cheeks.
“Where are you going?”
"Oh...we need more fertilizer..I was just..." He gestured vaguely towards the woods, hoping that explanation would be sufficient enough. But instead Newt frowned, stepping slightly closer.
"That's weird, because I saw Zart go and fetch some already this morning. So, wanna tell me what's really going on?"
Before Y/N could stop himself, his eyes flicked towards where Gally and the builders were now sitting and laughing. It was a quick movement, but enough for Newt's frown to deepen as he followed his gaze. When he saw Gally, his eyes snapped back to Y/N's.
"What did he do?"
"Nothing! Nothing. He didn't do anything..." But even as he was saying it, tears welled up in his eyes again, betraying him.
"Y/N, tell me what he did." Newt's voice had hardened and he took another step closer. "Please."
"He didn't do anything, I promise. He just...said some things again. About me. About who I am. About..." But he didn't need to say anything more, because Newt had already turned and was stalking towards the builders, fists clenched by his side.
"Newt, wait!"
Y/N ran to keep up with the blonde's long strides, brushing furiously at the tears that he couldn't stop from falling.
"Newt, stop, please." He grabbed his arm, pulling on it to no avail. Newt was angry, Y/N could see it in his clenched jaw and feel it in the taut muscles under his hand.
"No, Y/N." He muttered to the boy without looking at him. His gaze was centred on Gally now, and the fire in his eyes caused Y/N to shiver. "I'm not letting him treat you like this anymore."
There was nothing Y/N could do but follow behind him helplessly until they were standing in front of Gally and his lackeys, who nudged each other and quietened when they noticed the way Newt was glaring at their leader. Gally was the last to look up at Newt, a lazy smile on his smug face.
"Can I help you?"
Before anyone could react, Newt reached forward and grabbed Gally by his collar, pulling him up until they were nose-to-nose. Gally's eyes hardened as he tried to push Newt away, but his grip was firm. He shook the builder slightly as he spat out,
"Leave Y/N alone." At this, Gally snorted, shooting a look at Y/N.
"That freak? I ain't said nothing that wasn't true." Newt shook him roughly again, making him turn back to the angry blonde.
"He's not a freak. In fact, he's twice the man you'll ever be." With that, he threw Gally back with so much force that he tumbled on to the floor. Gally opened his mouth to say more, but before he could Newt leant forwards, addressing all of the builders now.
"If any of you ever dare speak to Y/N again, a night in the Slammer is gonna look like a holiday compared to what I'll do to you."
Y/N had never seen Newt so angry. With one last glare at the surrounding Gladers, he put his hand on Y/N's back and guided them both away. They walked in silence until they reached the gardens again. Even then, both were silent as they stood looking at each other. The fire was dying in Newt's eyes, and he took a deep breath as he ran a hand through his messy hair. He opened his mouth to speak, but Y/N beat him to it.
"Thank you. You didn't have to do that for me."
"Of course I did. And I meant what I said. You're twice the man they'll ever be, regardless of how you were born." He sent Y/N a small smile, who smiled softly in return.
"Thanks, Newt. And seriously, thanks for sticking up for me." He reached out for Newt's hand, squeezing it gently. Newt's smile grew as he squeezed back.
I keep trying to write imagines but they end up being so long they might as well be fanfic chapters 😂 Would people still read them if they were quite long?
