Postcards from El Paso: 1.) One of the coolest, most thoughtful gifts I have received was a stack of postcards from @teddyt, his bestie #EsmeBarrera & their friends from back home. "I got random El Pasoans & artists to write you notes on these postcards. Members of Sparta [also At The Drive In*], Modest Mouse, The Vue & other visitors wrote some too. Pretty Girls Make Graves & Mahjongg forgot to give me back their notes to you. ☹" 2.) Postcard from Teddy 3. & 4.) Postcards from Esme, one of the coolest ladies I've ever met. I was reminded of her today when I saw a @nobummersummer post. Ted said I reminded him of her, which is the highest compliment. 5.) A postcard from Sparta/At The Drive In lolllllll. 6-10.) More postcards from an awesome music scene & era in my life that left their mark on me. Thanks so much, Teddy TX/Brooklyn/now CT! I'll always love talking stories & sharing music w/ all of you. On this day, people tend to get reflective. But this night holds a heavier significance every year since NYE of 2011. I had seen Esme a few times when I was home about a week before NYE for the first time since leaving Austin. One of my very dear friends was very close with her since they worked together at Waterloo many years ago, which is how I came to know Esme.

Even years later, it's still so shocking that such a random, terrible and violent crime could happen to someone so full of life.

Even more incredible was the outpouring of support, grief, and tribute far and wide across the country. I only knew Esme through the music scene, and really, had no idea how many people's lives she had touched outside of that world. The benefits and tributes organized were such a testament to how many people's lives she had touched and how much of herself she gave to all of her 'communities'.

Going forward, I always try to remember on this day especially - to be grateful on a daily basis for this gift of life, to express my appreciation and love to the people that matter most as often as possible, to continue to take risks, and to contribute as much as possible to my 'communities' and things I feel passionate about.

Esme, I strive to live with your zest for life. You always will be an inspiration. Never forget and stay safe tonight, folks.

Yesterday was a terrific day for donations!  Thank you to everyone who shared and contributed.

It's Wednesday, and we are right smack in the middle of our first ever Junior Girls Rock Camp! Keep the momentum going and help send more Juniors to camp next summer by contributing to the Esme Barerra Scholarship Fund and Tribute Record (which sounds great at first pressing, btw).
