DAY 14 - ...It is now!
The 24 hour journey from Kumasi to Leeds Bradford Airport began this morning and it’s fair to say that we were not particularly looking forward to it. In our last ever minibus journey we continued the tradition of singing along to the radio, complaining about the air conditioning and moaning about the lack of legroom. Immediately after arriving on the minibus at the bus centre, we were treated to a comfy seat on a VIP bus bound for the capital of Ghana, Accra (we had to endure six hours of atrocious Ghanaian films though!) We finally said goodbye to Ghana as we boarded the 10.05 flight to Amsterdam; that was only after spending over five hours in the airport though! During this time we were unable to buy any proper food either because it was too expensive, it had to be paid for in US dollars or they didn’t have any left. On the flight this time I watched one film (Identity thief) before falling asleep for the remainder of the flight. When I finally woke up, I was distraught to find out that during this time I’d missed out on the appetising meals of cheese and cucumber sandwiches and beef mixed with salad. Following this flight was a relatively short one hour flight back to Leeds where we were reunited with our families and (all but one of us) with our suitcases. It was incredible to be back home after a fantastic two weeks in Ghana. Having lost around half a stone during the trip, my stomach was delighted to find a plate stacked high with bacon on the table when I got home. The memories of my time in Ghana will stay with me forever and hopefully I’ll be able to keep in touch with my friends there (Theo added me on Facebook so it shouldn’t be too difficult). There has already been talk of a return to Ghana after university if we can afford it. I’d like to round off by saying a huge thank you to ESP for funding my volunteering trip to Ghana and I hope that after reading my blogs other businesses may feel inclined to do the same for other volunteers.
